8x10 photos... is it "trimming"?

I picked up a few autographed photos of some old WW2 era NY Giants (baseball) players a while back. They're b/w photos with white borders. On the backs the previous collector had written some notes about the players, which is cool. The photos are slighly taller than 10 inches, and the top edge and corners have taken a bit of a beating.
Would it be sacrilege to trim off a bit of the top border to sharpen up it's presentation?
As a card collector, I consider it a crime to trim a card, but I don't really know if it makes a difference with photos.
