What is the strangest photo/background item to appear on a card?

I was reading another thread where there was an old "woody" station wagon in the background of a card which I thought was kind of neat, but strange. So what do you regard as a "strange" card? photo/background, or otherwise?

  • I just got this Jay Johnstone card in a pack of '84 Fleer (see the '80's pack bust thread) .....

Fleer did a lot of these type of cards in the 80's. I remember one (Len Barker??) with a snake around his neck.

Also, all the 1964 Philadelphia Cleveland Browns football cards players are pictured in front of a new Caddy. I'm not sure exactly sure of the story, but Philly gum showed up to take the pictures and for whatever reason they had to take the photos in the parking lot. Needing some kind of background, Jim Brown pulled up his new Caddy, and all the players took their pictures posing in front of it.

On the back of Karl Malone's 1990-1991 Skybox card, there's a pic of him riding a horse.

Cliff Floyd's 1992 Bowman "Air-Jordan" shot is kinda cool too.

How about the dude grabbing his crotch in the background. I forgot which year or card it was but there was that version and an airbrushed version of it.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Nah, that's not part of the background ms, those are actually his ears...

Mikeschmidt....you would have to post that. I have only been able to accumulate one of the Topps 1955 Stamps...and it happens to be that guy. Makes me want to cry.

Was it also '84 Fleers that featured that guy posing with the snake or was it the '83 Fleers?
  • 1984 Fleer Glenn Hubbard & 1981 fleer Rod Carew with that giant Palm Springs mountain in the background

You've gotta be referring to '73 Topps baseball, right? That set has a couple other interesting shots. I'll have to look at my set tonight and see what else I can find.

I happen to be looking at that mountain right now. There's no snow on it though.

  • This looks pretty creepy. Just saw it on the 1950 Bowman SMR page.

There is a small Ralston Purina set from the late 80s or early 90s with players and their dogs. It is possibly my all-time favorite. It has a great checklist as well. I will scan some ASAP.

  • These are a few of the goofy ones that I have pulled out while sorting. I have only started with these, so I know there will be more. 1999 Upper Deck Mike Cameron on a cordless phone and a Stadium Club Jose Rijo with wacky sunglasses are around somewhere.

That '81 Fleer is one of my favorite Carew cards. The Ozzie Smith that year is similar. Good stuff.

The one where the guy is holding his own baseball card is cool. Would have been even neater if he was holding a card of a picture of him holding a card etc.

  • the pete and re-pete card from the 80s is cool.
so is the joe montana on the telephone from the 80s.

The 1973 set really does have some pretty amazing pictures in it, for good and for bad:

    The good:

    image

A classic shot of Crowley coming home, with only Thurman Munson and a quickly arriving baseball (in the upper right-hand corner of the pic) in his way

    Bad:

    image

Gotta love those loyal Padres fans

    Ugly:

    image

These pics may not be the best to demonstrate. I'll try to post better pics later tonight.

Looks like Tito is choking the guy out trying to steal base with his leg, or worse...

Azocar.....that guy, at one point in the late 80's was the 2nd best hitter on the New York Yankees for months at a time....Him an Mattingly were the only guys swinging a hot bat back then!

I always associate the 1974 Topps Mike Schmidt with the bullpen car in the background.

Someone on this board already tipped me to that one a while back. One of my favorites. I actually only have one of each version. When I buy a extra, I grade it and sell it and use profits to buy 89 rack cases to look for needed versions !! Woo Hoo !!

  • Not really a strange background but goes along with odd. PM me if you want to know whats wrong. image

Yeah and he had it when this photo was taken. I wonder how the guy in front of him felt about that. image
  • I thought to PM the answer as I dont want any PSA troubles.

  • This 1971 Brooks Robinson is a strange card. Looks like the picture was taken from a balloon.
