Why are the 1984-91 Topps glossy sets called Tiffany sets?

I mean, I never saw the name "Tiffany" on any of the boxes or on the cards themselves, so where did the term "Tiffany" come from?

They have always been "nicknamed" that, but never officially by Topps. Sort of like from along gone era when we had to invent names to categorize certain sets, like T206 etc. I believe the reference had something to do with a similar high quality brand not related to sports cards...
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

From The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards:

In 1984 Topps introduced a specially boxed, limited edition version of its baseball card set. Sold only through hobby dealers, the cards differed from regular-issue 1984 Topps cards in their use of white cardboard stock and the application of a high-gloss finish to the front of the card. Production was limited to a reported 10,000 sets. The nickname "Tiffany" was coined by collectors to identify the glossy collectors edition.

The "Tiffany" sets should not be confused with the Glossy All-Star sets from the same period. They are very similiar in the way they were produced but they are not the same. Those started in 1983 as a prize in a scratch off contest. In subsequent years, the Glossy All-Star cards were issued one per rack pack. Hope this helps! image

There were actually *three* glossy sets produced by Topps for many years during the 1980's.

1: Tiffany - complete 792 card glossy set. Only available in complete sets.

2: Topps Glossy All-Stars - available one per rack pack. 22 card set comprised of the prior year's all-stars image
3: Topps - available by sending wax wrappers to Topps. I think you'd get eight or ten players from the 60 (?) player set.
