NEWPS- All 1901 Vickies- I've been a little busy...

Bought some new Vickies for my daughter's 1901 Victorian typeset. My "VTS" numbers are where they fit into the set, which will comprise 45 coins total.

(VTS06) 1901 CANADIAN FIVE CENTS ICCS EXTRA FINE - 40

Looks AU50ish to me?

(VTS07) 1901 Canada 10 cents, UNC, toned.

Bought from our very own ajaan, who got it from bluemooncoins originally. It's much purpler in hand, in certain lighting. Wild.

(VTS17) CYPRUS Rare 1901 18 Piastres Victoria RARE

A nice upgrade to my harshly-cleaned VG. Still only around a Fine or so, but these seem to be tough to find unpolished (as most Cyprus silver seems to be), and I liked the look of this one. Besides, I paid less than Krause Fine price and less than I paid for the polished VG it is replacing. These are supposedly tough coins but you see them all over eBay, perhaps because of their supposed scarcity? This will do 'til I fork out the big bucks for an AU or UNC piece.

(VTS28) VICTORIA 1/2 CROWN 1901 BU

Well, I debated for two days and finally pulled the trigger on this one. It fills an empty hole in the Victorian typeset, and I paid just a hair below Krause UNC. If it matches the pics in hand, it should be okay, I think. If there is luster not seen in the pics, so much the better.

(VTS32) 1901 Hong Kong 5 Cents NGC MS63 Choice Lustrous!!

From our own Filamcoins. (No, I did not pay the BIN price listed.) Thanks!

(VTS33) HONG KONG SILVER 10 CENTS 1901 CHOICE "UNC" GRADE L@@K

As with several of these purchases, I overpaid a tiny bit, but not enough to really care. If the coin has decent luster I will consider it a good buy.

(VTS34) 1901 INDIA 1 1/2 ANNA XF LOT 24

Okay, so this looks to have some possible staining or even verdigris and the pics are bad. However, I think their "XF" grade is quite conservative, and can you say ONE CENT BUY-IT-NOW PRICE?. Hey, that was a no-brainer. Even with $2.99 shipping I come out okay, I reckon. This will fill the empty hole until a nicer one comes along. Three bucks total? Pah! I pulled the trigger!

(VTS42) Straits Settlements 1901 Unc 5 Cents Silver

I did not hit BIN on this but rather bid- and a bit too hastily, at that. Did not notice the rim hit on the reverse, even though the seller noted it... at the very beginning of the description, in ALL CAPS. (Duh?! How 'bout you READ and LOOK CLOSELY before bidding, LordM? *slap*slap*! When will you learn?) I hoped to be outbid, but not surprisingly, I won. Oh well. Looks a bit scuffy and there's that rim nick, but if it is indeed a true UNC I got it at half Krause, and this filled another empty hole. I can live with that. Maybe it will even look a little better in hand. Who knows.

But I have some of your collectibles in that collectionimage, it's just an extension of what you have already started. Save up your pennies and buy it when the time comes.image

Rob, the set has grown quite a bit. I would never have thought it would be so large by now. Quite an increase since 2001 and that GB 1901 1d eh? or was it a 1/2d, my memory ain't so good anymore.

I think it was a 1/2d, Don. You had the honor of starting the whole thing off.

For those who don't know the story, I met Don when he sent me a PM offering a Victorian halfpenny in honor of our Victoria's birth, which I'd just announced. She was born September 21, 2001, which is where the 1901 theme got started, since "The New Victorian Era" began a century after the old one ended.

I didn't know Don then, but thought it was generous of him to offer. I'd already gotten a coin from Neil ("maddogale"), and I figured Don would just send your typical 1901 halfpenny. We were strangers, after all. But nooo- he sends a RB UNC!

He later contributed the farthing and penny, too... all RB UNC (the farthing might be a high AU). And even later sent an upgrade to a "redder" penny! And also donated a 1901 Brit trade dollar which I am keeping with the "extras" that aren't really part of the set.

Don and Dimitri have been the biggest contributors, not only through purchases but gifts as well. Dimitri gave a BU shilling and florin!

As to that original RB UNC 1/2d, Don, I cannot recall if it is still the one in the set or not. I was fortunate enough to cherrypick another out of a $5.00 pick bin at the last FUN show I attended (2004), and I can't remember if it upgraded the one you sent or not. They were pretty darn close. I kept one and sold the other. I think the one in the set might be your original one, since the one I cherrypicked was kind of dirty looking (it had been loose in the bulk bin I found it from). However, it cleaned up nicely with a Vaseline rub and proved to be slightly prooflike. I still think I kept your coin instead, though.

PS- for all of those of you who gifted coins to the set, I have tried to keep track of who donated what, so your names will go down in posterity and Victoria will wonder who you were when she's all grown up. Hey, maybe you'll still be on Collectors Universe. She'll probably get the finished set as a wedding gift from me. In the meantime, it's my set, to enjoy building and upgrading. Some folks' coins have since been upgraded (Blackhawk's gift of an AU Hong Kong 5c, for example, has just been replaced by an NGC MS63 I bought from Filamcoins). But if I sell any upgraded pieces I will try to keep a record of them for posterity's sake.

You really have been busy, some very nice additions there. I particularly liked the way that you handled the Straits settlements case, which btw looks much more promising in the obverse photo, you took your hit if any for being careless and didn't whine about it at the seller and much less here. It's little incidents like this and others that tell a lot about you. image

Just thinking here Rob. For display purposes I would keep all the slabbed coins in their current slab and put the unslabbed coins into Coin World type slabs if they have the correct size insert. I would then place the whole collection in a nice binder with pages used to hold slabs. Each country would have it's own banner with country name, population, area, and other pertinent information you think is appropriate.

I know, those ICCS coins are a pain in my album plan. Cut those suckers out and send them to NGC or PCGS.

I just cut out my ICCS VF20 Canadian quarter this morning, and put it into a Saflip. The big crown-sized outer flip they used wouldn't go into my pocket pages. I kept the insert; folded it up and tucked it into the new flip, which is what I'll likely do if I crack out any of the slabs. I haven't done that, yet. It seems a shame to do that with some coins, like the Terner-pedigreed MS64 half-sov I got from Dimitri.

Don, I thought about using an Eagle slab album. I still have a dusty one out in the shed somewhere. I didn't think about using the Coin World holders- that's a good idea. I wonder how to get the inserts in all kinds of strange mm sizes, though?

Holey cow... that halfcrown I just bought? "Jeffone" is Jeffrey Zarit!

Some of you will remember my anecdote about this guy, when I met him in person at the last FUN show I attended.

His greeting to me, upon seeing my Holey Coin Vest and Holey Gold Hat, was:

"You DO realize you look like a f#@%ing idiot, don't you?"

    image

No wonder the auction description had such an unfriendly feel to it. Ha.

Well, it looks like a nice coin. The guy's numismatic principles aren't in question, even if his personality is.

But I guess I'd better get him a money order fast, huh? image
