Who is the better coach, Tom Izzo or Lloyd Carr (does anyone care)?

Help me settle an argument with my brother. Both of us are two time MSU graduates, but we disagree strongly on the answer to this question. Along with your answer, perhaps you can state what you feel is the college football equivalent of the Final Four. Is it a BCS bowl bid?

Duffy was better than both of them, having pointed that out I'd take Izzo at least he gets out of his guys what they have, while Carr has had a propensity of having tons of talent that end up playing mediocre games. Carr has always struck me until this year of being afraid to lose and unimagitive.
  • Look for Izzo to get out of coaching within the next 5 years or so. He seems to be getting more and more
frustrated and burned out in interviews with the local media and he has been dropping hints that he wants
to get away from the coaching grind and all the pressure. Players leaving early for the NBA is a fact of life
these days but that irritates him as well.

I'd say Izzo, for the reasons that baseball mentioned. Last year UM has zero players drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL draft. Given that their recruiting classes are routinely in the top 5, this seems almost impossible-- yet Lloyd Carr somehow pulled it off.

And it's time for everyone to quit drinking the U of M kool aid. The big 11 is down-- really down-- this year, and aside from the ND game Michigan hasn't played anyone (unless you count Wisconsin, which I don't, since Wisconsin hasn't beaten anyone either). 8 pt. win over Ball St.? C'mon. And to answer one of Tom's original questions, I don't think a BCS bid is anywhere near as impressive as getting to a Final 4. To get to a BCS game all you need to do is win your conference- something you can do by only beating one or two good teams (if you play in the Big 11). To get to a Final Four you need to win four games straight, and the last three will usually be against pretty good teams. And, of course, you need to have had at least a decent regular season to get invited to the tournament.

In my opinion, they are about equal, with a slight edge to Izzo.

Over a 10 year-period, each has won a national championship. Carr has 5 B10 (5 of the last 7) titles to Izzo's 4, but Izzo has 4 trips to the Final Four (in 7 years), which is an impressive feat. Carr has taken Michigan to a bowl game every season. Excluding his first two seasons, Izzo has led the Spartans to 8 consecutive NCAA tournaments.

Needless to say, they have both been very successful. However, here is where I give the edge to Izzo: Carr has lost 4 of 5 games against the Sweater Vest. Unless UM can come through with a big win on Saturday, Carr will have earned the reputation of not being able to win the big one (tOSU) against Tressel, although he faired very well against Cooper (5 out of 6).

Also, don't forget that Izzo basically built a program, while Carr has more or less just maintained one. It's harder to be an engineer than a custodian.

This almost seems to be comparing apples to oranges... I think both are excellent coaches. I think Izzo ranks higher among active College Basketball coaches than Carr does among active College Football coaches.

Biggie Munn was a great coach at Michigan State and deserves to be mentioned as was Duffy.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Well of course YOU don't care. After all, neither Izzo nor Carr are very good dancers. . .

Exactly, you cannot compare a coach from one sport to another! Also, if Michigan does not get it done Saturday against Ohio State, I am going to have to hear all that talk in the offseason, yet again! Even if Michigan does not win, he will have a .500 record against the Buckeyes! But right now, he is sitting on the cusp of another national championship!
