Ancient Coin ID Help

Got another, this one cleaned very quickly in the olive oil. I've asked one more place, and they say that it is probably a wax seal. Anyone here know for sure or have any other info? Thanks!

That coin looks cup-shaped, if it is chances are it is Byzantine.

Certainly I've seen more Byzantine coins on flans of that shape.

Picture is too dark to make out much detail. Not that I could help you with a Byzantine coin, anyway, but those who can will need to see it better, probably, and on both sides.

  • Yeah, about that...

The 'coin' is cup shaped, so the scanner would not pick up an image of the entier coin. You're not really missing anything, this is more than I can see in hand. The other side has very little on it, if anything. It's rather small, about the size of a dime.

Sounds like some Byzantine pieces I have.

Unfortunately, I have no Byzantine coin reference books. Yet.
