Guy uses rare stamp to mail in ballot in Florida!!

One of the most prized stamps was used to mail in a ballot in Miami this past week.

An Inverted Jenny (an upside down biplane) that only 1 page was known to exist was used.

The page was broken up into 4's and singles long ago.

The 500.000 is the value of the stamp after it's use!

The govt. now owns the stamp.

Sounds like there should be more to this story...

I remember last year, or a few years ago when the U.S. Mint or someone was putting some rare and valuable pennies into circulation - but I never heard anything about that again...

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Richard Pryor did that in the movie "Brewster's Millions". (Remember he had to spend $1 million in 30 days AND have no assets at the end of that 30 days.)

    Interesting.

Kind of reminds me of the movie Brewster's Millions as Redh said - but it's 30 million in 30 days to inherit 300 million.

Also, in an episode of Leave it to Beaver - Larry and Beave take his dad's prized ball with names like Babe Ruth, Kiki Cuyler, Alexander etc. and play catch with it - the ball winds up under the wheels of a truck!

I have no inside information, but I suspect we
may have another "urban legend" in the works.

Since EBAY has totally destroyed the investment-grade
stamp community, by allowing stickers to be sold as
stamps, the stories seldom ring true to me. Once affixed,
the fakes look pretty good on a cover.

Time will tell if the latest "discovery" is for real.

This will turn out to be a huge joke. The ballot had no name on it (so it is disallowed), so time will prove that this was just one of those attention grabbing stunts.......
  • I loved Brewsters Millions as a kid. I think John Candy bought a catchers mask that belonged to Johnny Bench? Were there any other references to collectibles, besides the stamp?

Then those crooked lawyers read about it in the paper..."it isn't an asset any more, he's mailed it!"

Maybe it's not an urban legend...

YES, $30 million! Duh! Considering how many times I've seen the movie, how could I have forgotten??

What's the story of this? I always figured that stamp collectors were stodgy old guys who "didn't need no one tellin' 'em how to grade stamps" but was there an actual scandal that wrecked the PSE market? (The reason I ask is because my father has been collecting stamps for over thirty years but has not jumped into the grading game- although he pretty much endorses card grading.)

Must have been one of the old timers who couldn't figure out how not to leave a hanging chad, so did an absentee instead.

Speaking of Brewsters Millions, does anyone remember the ebay auction (maybe 4 years ago) where the lot contained an early version of the script - which had a scene where Brewster opens lots of old packs of Topps - and also contained a few of these specially made packs (loaded with vintage stars). Evidently they were wrapped by Topps with vintage stars purchased on the secondary market? Sold for about $500 as I recall.

"but was there an actual scandal that wrecked the PSE market?"

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The scandal is long-ongoing, and has made PSE absolutely necessary
    in any high-end transaction.

The tip of the iceberg can be seen on EBAY with the search terms
"stamp replica," "faux covers." These are the so-called "honest"
sellers of counterfeit stamps. (The stamp/sticker like the one that is the
subject of this thread can be seen using those searches.)

I do not know if I can manipulate the counterfeits in a manner that
will fool PSE, but I do know that I can fool even experienced stamp
    collectors/investors.

The technology for the scams became widespread about five-years
ago. EBAY has delivered the tools to every cheap hood on the planet.

I know that many disagree with me, but I am against the public sale
of ANY replica item that "might be used to cheat someone." That
includes the "replica" sports-cards. (Some of the SK sets from China
can be mainipulated/aged in such a way that only PSA/BVG can tell. That
kind of carp is BAD for any hobby; especially one that has an investment
    component.)
