2007 Silver Britannia - First Photo!

image

Courtesy of the British Royal Mint press release:

"As you may be aware, Britannia’s image is steeped in history, having featured on a coin of every British monarch since the reign of Charles II in 1630. 2007 marks the beginning of a new chapter in Britannia’s history with the issue of a brand new reverse design by a brand new coin designer, artist Christopher Le Brun RA.

Reverse Design
The reverse design features Christopher Le Brun’s portrayal of a seated Britannia gazing out to sea, with cliffs disappearing into the background and a lion stretched out at her feet. The contemporary design incorporates the traditional symbolism of Britannia with the inclusion of Neptune’s trident resting in her right hand, a sprig of olive in her left and a shield standing prominently at her side.

Obverse Design
The obverse design features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II."

Nice looking coin that reminds me of the Wood/Paget pattern "Peace" Crown of 1926...

    me likey !!
  • Shep,

I am trying to decide whether to carry these or not... they will be terribly expensive since the BRM just raised their premium (over spot) and a crappy UK vs. US exchange rate will push the wholesale price to around $23,000 per 1,000 coins. To make it worthwhile, I would need to sell these in the $27 range per coin (15-20% margin, less CC fees, etc.). Would you and other forum members be willing to pay this kind of money for a "bullion coin"? I am quite skeptical since these would be about the same retail price as a 2007 U.S. Mint PROOF Silver Eagle, which includes a nice plush velvet case and capsule... Your thoughts on this Britannia "sticker-shock" would be greatly appreciated.

  • Nice design. Looks like Britannia's flowing hair has finally been revealed after 10 years covered by a helmet (at least on the silver issues). The lion is cool.

Any word on whether the uncirculated version will be a reverse proof or fully brilliant?
  • The BRM press release did not specify if the coin would be a reverse proof-like or fully brilliant but the photo shows a regular proof (mirrored fields and frosted devices). This does not necessarily mean that the coin will be released as shown. Historically, even numbered years are Nathan's standing Britannia design in reverse proof-like while odd numbered years are "one-off" designs in brilliant proof-like. See photos below:

I would buy one in that price range, but I can surely see how the inflated price would drive off many casual buyers. The Royal Mint sure is pushing the pricing envelope....

  • I figured that those would be expensive - the darn exchange rate and the BRM's pricing, but at $27.00, if they are as nice as the release picture and if they are regular proof form, would not be out of reach.
I can see that you,as a dealer, takes a risk with not a lot of return on investment.

oops, empty post... edited to add

That is worthy of buying a couple. If you stock them, put me down for 5 even at those prices imageimageimage. And the libertads too...sigh. Maybe you could do a dutch auction on ebay...you might get some takers plus a few who then check out your website.

If the Forum will take a step backwards, this is the nicest GB design I've seen in a long time, much preferable to the helmet with hair design...

I like that coin, but don't love it. While the concept is very good I think the finished product is just a little cartoonish. I have sold my Britannia collection (except the 1997 set), so I would not buy one

  • I would buy one of those at that price I have last years and plan on getting them every year. If you look at the Austrialian Kangroos they are seling for around 40+ dollar and I know they are selling very well and I plan on gettign one of them. SO yes I think a nice coin like this you could move very easy at that price

I'm so-so on the design and agree with the "unfinished" look to it, complete with the disgruntled lion who looks to need a war or meal ?? How many of these do they expect to make, surely not 100,000. If they said 20k I might go for it.
