1986 McDonalds NFL cards

Anybody know how rare these are? I know there are 4 color variations with black and blue being the thoughest and green and orange being the easiest. It's McDonalds so I'm assuming they made a boat load but I was wondering if anyone had further information on the issue. They're pretty nice looking cards.

  • I remember those, I think. Are they the ones that you had to scratch off on the bottom and they were perforated? If so I have a box full of them somewhere. One of my friend’s older sister worked the counter and when we bought something she gave us a whole pile of them. We kept the Bears, Dolphins, and 49ers in holders and scratched off the rest to hopefully get free food. Are they worth anything or should they stay lost in the closet? I would think there are tons of them but few gems. The adults use to throw them away. I remember walking around and asking if I could have them and most handed them over like they were junk. I have not seen or thought of them since I was a kid. Thanks for the fond flashback!

  • I have no idea what they're worth. I just picked up some fo the Patriots sets because its got one of the few MOsi Tatupu cards there are. I would imagine that there's a ton of the stuff but finding them with the scratch tab still attached and unscratched might prove tough.

Plus, they were given out one at a time so I can't imagine they weathered the storm condition-wise. I just like them because they're oversized and have huge pictures of the players. The colored scratch tab also adds a little flavor as well.

Anybody got an idea about a checklist? I think this would be a cool set to have. Also, does anyone know if they were regional ... meaning you could only get the team that was closest to you?

  • I can tell you that there certainly isnt a shortage of supply with these. I have a ton of them and they arent worth the space that they take up. The supposed "shortage" or rare variations is really only a selling point as there are a ton of all of them with hardly any collector interest. If the cards ever picked up even a buck or two in price, you would see literally millions being dumped at once..........
  • Heres a quote from Larry Fritschs site to help sell the millions he has:

In 1986 McDonald's Restaurants issued team sets regionally. For example, the Green Bay Packers were issued only in Wisconsin. Cities not located near an NFL city were issued an All-Star set. These beautiful full-color action cards measure approximately 3-1/16” by 4-11/16”. These sets were released in just a four-week period. Supplies are very limited.

We got a mix of all of the teams available when I lived in Florida.

  • Fanatic, I'm sure you're right. I highly doubt they're scarce or valuable. I do really like the design and the large photos. I also think it's cool that there are more cards in this set than inthe '86 Topps set and include RCs of guys like Rice, Young, Smith, etc. Also, there's a Randall Cunningham RC when Topps didn't issue their first Cunningham card until '87.

A fun set that's inexpensive and nice to look at. Anyone know if these need to be graded like tallboys?

    Arthur
  • It was definately a fun set. I can tell you that way back when, I actually scratched off a Lawrence Taylor and was able to get a Big Mac!

the rice seems to sell ok. the others can be had in a 9 anywhere from $4-10. i have a few listed now and noticed 4SC has some 9s at $4 buy-it-now. not bad pricing considering the grading fees. i also have some in as a submission from last month. i like seeing the big cards in the holders.

    Thanks,

I've got several Bears sets and some nice Paytons. I've thought about getting them graded. Does anyone know if you grade these on the $5 special?

Im sorry sir but you are mistaken image
  • what about the Don mattingly Cal ripken version of the mcdonalds card, is this as common as the football issues?
  • PSA does grade these but I don't know where they fit in as far what service level you have to submit them in. It would be great if they can be sent in under normal card levels as I've got some serious Tatupu to get graded.

Matt, here's a Cowboys Team Set for $6.

Is there a page on the site that tells you what cards are considered tall boys and which ones aren't? Maybe they list exceeding dimensions or something? Thanks

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

There were 29 different sets issued by McDonald's in 1986, with 4 color variations of each. The metropolitan areas around the 28 NFL teams (at the time) each had a team set, while the rest of the country got an All-Star set. The All-Star cards look the same as the team set cards but have an All-Star logo near the bottom. The All-Star cards are considerably cheaper than the team set cards because many more were issued.

Each tab color (orange, green, black, and blue) was offered for one week. Some team set colors are inexplicable rare... I think Falcons Orange was crazy expensive at some point.

The Payton card pictured by Sheamaster on Page 1 is from the 1985 McDonald's Bears set. They only issued Bears in 1985. In 1993 McDonald's once again issued NFL cards in regional team and national all-star formats. These were issued as uncut sheets in the "Gameday" style, and are probably the ones mmsportscards mentioned on Page 1.

As others have posted, PSA does grade them and they are are considered tallboys.

The '85 and '86 sets are quite condition sensitive. They're oversized and the scratch off area tends too, well, scratch off. The distribution method didn't help, either. If you have a PSA 9, you're doing great.

All of that said, these are NOT rare OR valuable, even in top shape. The reason is that, like all of the winning McDonald's Monopoly pieces, these were backdoored like crazy. Even today you can find dealers with every team set, in every color, and every team set advertising poster, in never-issued shape, for a few bucks each.

Still a very cool set. This board needs more oddball football discussion image.

Correction, I checked my Beckett annual and it's Falcons Black that is valuable. Bills and Colts blue seem to be outliers as well.
