More generally, what do you do with coins that remain unidentifiable by you? Send them in to one of the grading agencies? Thanks!

No, because when I finally do identify them, they usually end up having a catalog value of 50 cents or something like that, and are therefore not worth slabbing.

I puzzle over them with the Krause catalogs and other references, and when I am finally stumped I post pictures of them here. There have been very, very few times when everybody here was also stumped.

For me, mystery coins go in the mystery book, and stay there until they're not mysteries anymore.

As for this particular coin, since its not listed in the references, I'd suspect it's a privately countermarked coin. The seller seems convinced it's from Saudi Arabia; Krause notes that the officially countermarked Saudi coins of 1946 were done "to break money changers' monopoly on small coins". Given the countermark is dated from before the official countermark series (AH 1362 is AD 1943), I suspect this might be a moneychanger's mark. Of course, it could also be something the seller knocked up yesterday.

Either way, I'm not sure it's worth the $100 the seller is asking (hoping!) for.
