1979 FB vs 1981 FB

I am thinking about buying two boxes from one of these years. I am looking at value for what I have to pay for a box, future value or resale, and the fun factor when I open one of the boxes. Let me know which year you would pick and why. I am leaning toward the 1979 box.

While the 79 doesnt have the Mega card Excitement of the 81 Montana, I say go with the 79's because for the price I think you have the chance to pull more stars than 81. Plus 79 has been hot lately for some reason.

  • Well being a die-hard 49er fan I think you can't go wrong with the 81 box. With the Joe Montana rookie leading the way (and don't forget Dwight Clark, "The Catch" rookie), I think you would be very happy to pull hopefully at least a couple Montana rookies, and to think if one or two come back PSA 10's. WOW!!! Good luck!!!!

MLAB, if you're a true "die-hard" 49er fan, you gotta get rid of the Cincinnati logo.

I mean, Montana to Taylor, they ripped our hearts out. image

  • BigRedMachine: you'll have to forgive me I know it sounds/looks weird but in baseball I'm a die-hard Reds fan. We were so close this year I could taste it. I guess I could have scrolled farther down for the 49er logo but that old Reds logo was too appealing!!!! In case your wondering I'm a Warriors fan for basketball and a Penguins fan for hockey.

We were close this year. Perhaps next year???? Probably not.

I believe the 1979 packs contain 12 cards and the 1981 packs contain 15 cards. That's 108 more cards in a 36 pack wax box for the 1981's (or 25% more). If you're looking to grade the cards, and you figure the front card is going to be ruined by gum and the back card ruined by wax, it's actually 30% more "gradable" cards (13 vs. 10) in each 1981 pack.

Each year has a handful of Hall-of-Famers and rookies. SMR lists 6 cards at $300+ in PSA 10 for 1979 (Newsome rookie, Lofton rookie, Cambell rookie, Staubach, Payton, and Bradshaw). Only the Montana lists for $300+ in PSA 10 for 1981 (albeit it is $3300!).

I think you can't go wrong either way. I like the styles of both cards. Keep us "posted" on your decision. Good luck!
  • We can dream and hope!!! Thanks!!!

Thanks for the input. Once I decide on the year and crack one of the boxes, I'll post an update.
  • The last 81 box my dealer friend opened had two Montana's and several other greats, so the 81 is a good pick!!!!
