An 1822/1 arrived from Brian Greer Rare Coins

I had never done business with Brian so I thought I would give him a shot. I saw that he had an 1822/1 O-102 in VF listed on the website so I decided to inquire about it. It arrived today and it is a great addition to the album. The coin has light blue toning that can be saw in the images but only shows in the right lighting. I will definitely be checking Brian's inventory from now on. So what do you think of her?

Ok, what makes this an overdate ? Are there any keys to identify the normal "22" vs "22/1"?

The main identifier of the 1822 vs. the 1822/1 is that on the 1822/1 the base of the second 2 is much heavier then the base of the first 2 in the date.

Most listings show this O-102 R4+ as 1822/1. It is not really an overdate, according to many serious Capped Bust Half collectors, including Edgar Souders. Edgar believes a defective punch, along with die wear, caused the debris that was thought to be an overdate.

Since the price sheets still include this marriage as an overdate, it still brings a price premium over a common 1822. The O-101 R1 is a much more common supposed 1822/1. These two marriages do not share obverse or reverse. CoinAddicts O-102 1822/1(?) is worth about double the worth of the more common O-101 1822/1(?).

In all the years I have collected CBHs, I only owned one O-102. CoinAddict did well to find this coin.

Thanks for the additional information, Mozin. So technology you are saying that there is no overdate for 1822.

If anyone is interested I paid $240 for this coin.

Does not look like one of the two commonly called 1822/1. The star to curl position does not look right, the curls on the "2's" are too much alike, and the last "2" position under the curl does not look right.
