Joe Orlando's "Top 200 Sportscards In The Hobby" book (Great scans! Enjoy them!)

UPDATE: I UPLOADED SCANS OF THESE COOL PICS BELOW FOR ALL TO ENJOY!

What I like about this book, are the pictures of the "top 200" Sportscards. All are high end PSA examples!

Every time I pick this book up, I enjoy those pics! (In fact, the back the pages came loose from binding from opening this book up so many times over the past few years!)

edit: P.S. Now that would make one heck of a "Collector's Showcase", having a Registry of the top 200 sportscards in the hobby! Wow! image

As long as the pages came loose from the binding, I figured I would scan a few of these pages for some who have not seen this book:

I look at the pic in this thread and got rather disgusted by the lack of football cards.

    5 Football
    14 Basketball
    10 Hockey
    3 Golf
    43 Baseball

What the heck, does football get no respect? I thought it was the 2nd most collected sport rather than baseball?

Where is the Knute Rockne card? What about Bronko Nagurski? Namath? Butkus ahead of these guys?

    .

    .
    .
    .
    .
Then I clicked the link to the set registry and found the whole set. 35 football cards out of 200, that is more like it.

The rest of the sports go as follows

    2 Misc
    3 Golf
    5 Boxing
    10 Hockey
    14 Basketball
    35 Football
    131 Baseball

That looks much better but I think we need to make the list 201. We need to add a Favre card (1992 or 1991 Stadium Club?)

    Thanks for letting me rant

I thought Tony Gwynn (1983 Topps) would be up there as well.

Mike- you got the book from renewing your collectors club membership.

I have no idea where you put your keys though. Sorry.

i guess the next edition will have some omissions in light of the steroid news....SOSA and McGwire get tossed in the discount rack like another can of beans.....

the 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly should definately be on the list!!!!! (let it replace the Sosa card...i think the 84 Donruss Mattingly is held in WAY HIGHER REGARD then the 1990 leaf Sosa, not even close I dont believe....

I love the book, and when I first joined PSA I received it and started buying only cards in that book.

I imagine if it was written today, the Piazza and Sosa rookies might be excluded??

The '83 topps Gwynn and '51 Bowman Mantle are also on the list. Keep in mind there are only about 75 of the 200 that were scanned. There are 125 more in the book. I love how each card is described, the level of difficulty, why it's on the list, and why it might stay on the list.

The preface says it's not just the most popular, or it would be all Mantle cards. It's not just the most rare, or it would be obscure stuff no one collects. It's a well thought out list, and most of the "big" cards you can think of are more than likely on it.

  • I have not seen the list, but Tiger Woods would have to be on it.

No other "single person" has been so completely dominant in their given sport as Tiger has been in golf.

When everything is said and done in his career, he will likely own at least 90% of all major golf records.

Who else will be able to say that ?

    RD, those cards are beautiful.

I don't know if I enjoy looking at them for their beauty, or get depressed because I'll never be able to afford 80% of them.

Like I said, I have the book and enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time to post so others can enjoy.

Ok, that is why Gwynn was missing....not all have been scanned.

Someone said it: the 1984 Donruss Mattingly should be up there as well. I agree!! That card and the Griffey really mark the 1980's.

I am surprised the Sosa is on there. It should be the Frank Thomas 1990 Leaf. That was a big card in the hobby and still is a card of a future HOF.

  • Those are some terrific cards. Too bad I only have a few of them, and not in the grades posted. image

Also, the 1952 Bowman football Frank Gifford pictured is clearly from the Bowman small issue, not Bowman large. If you look up the cert #, it shows Bowman small, but the flip in the picture states Bowman large... ?

Obviously I agree wholeheartedly about the Mattingly rookie. That was THE card for a generation of collectors. Maybe we can get an updated 200 Top cards and we can yank a couple of those cards (McGwire, Sosa, Piazza, etc) and replace them with cards that deserve to be there.
