Of All The Cards You Picked Up Raw....

tell us about one of your best buys - raw value - vs. graded SMR value.
Any surprises?
Mine was a 61F #46 IA - Baylor that I picked up for 30 bucks - had it graded - came back a PSA 9. Value?
Probably in the 600$ range?

STONE - That can't beat your T3 that came back a PSA-6
You could probably make at least a grand profit, maybe double that...jay

Bought strong 1955 Podres for 100 bucks and it graded PSA 8 which sells on ebay for 1400+ range, but only 2 have ever been on ebay. It is the 2nd lowest pop inthe set and he is a Brooklyn dodger, not to mention 7th game winner of 1955 world series over the yanks. This one nevers come up for sale!
Joined PSA at the Chicago National in July of 2005 and the '61 Aaron All Star was part of my inaugural submission.
Here's what it looks like today:
At the time of its grading, it was a 1/18 with none higher and it booked at $1250. Now it's 1/22 with one 10 now graded and it books at $800 (pretty accurate, I've tracked two sales on eBay and they both finished around $750). It shows the volatility of the high-end market...
Fun thread, Stone!

Good memory Jay
Now with respect to the relationship of original cost to SMR value it's not as good.
I paid 500$ for that card raw - but you're right - it was a good buy.
Also, the 75T mini Ryan - I techically paid 30$ for that card since I split a 60$ table with a guy for the card.
That came back a 9 - I think it's worth in the 400$ range?
thanx for the memory jog Jay

I like the thread Mike!
A 1973 Topps Reggie Jackson that I bought raw for about $11 delivered. It graded a 9 and I sold it for $270.
That card's off the chart!
Sweet.

This is the card I picked up raw that Quality is talking about.
It's a great looking card - many have asked to trade for it - but I can't part with it. It's just too darn nice.
Now, if I needed the $? It would be summarily sent over to Jay for liquidation.
Got it graded...
90564979 1970 TOPPS 90 O.J. SIMPSON N/A 9
Then sold it on Ebay earlier this year for just under $700.

Bought raw at show for $4. Not in SMR, but sell in $50-$80 range. Tough card due to the black borders.
One of the few advantages of being older than most is that your cards are older as well.

Advertised as "very good condition", not one crease, corners are good, and same size as my other '55s.
Seller had under 100 fb and didn't offer paypal. It had scam written all over it but the under $100 gamble paid off
Got this and 3 others from the set for $21 delivered. It's a 1922 Comic Life Sports Champions Jack Dempsey RC and no matter what it comes back for a grade I'll be quite happy with the deal I got.
The funny thing is that it was listed in the entirely wrong category (can't remember what it was now). Something crazy like 15th century Scandinavian saddles or something. I wish I knew how long it had been sitting in the guy's store for or if he would occasionally lower the price because it wasn't selling. Just dumb luck on my part.
Arthur
PS. And no, I don't want to hear any comments about why I was in the 15th century Scandinavian saddle category

I picked up this T206 for $40 raw... it would sell for $1200+ today I think.
Mine-
1953 Red Man Pee Wee Reese for $170 or $180. Came back an 8. The only one close I've seen sell was an SGC 88 for around $1400 in a Goodwin auction.
1959 Stan Musial #470 Hit #3000 for $50. Came back a 9. SMR used to be $750 but it may be less now.
Most of my better cards I bought in the '80s have come back at least an 8.
<< <i>Bought a '72 Tony Perez for $1. Graded a PSA 9 and sold for $85. >>
LOL! Like you and MJM, I too bought a '72 Perez raw. It originally came back an 8, I resubmitted it and got a 9, and sold it in the fall of '03 for about $180.

Great card and a real prize!

Sent them in, two came back as 8s, two as 7s.
I sold the two 8s for about $150 per, and kept the two 7s.
Bought (2) '67 Topps Hank Aarons during that same purchase, for $60 total. Both came back as 8s. Got around $250 - $275 each for those two. I still have two other '67 Aarons that are in equally great shape as the two 8s.
Also bought a 1955 Topps All-American common for $10. It graded out as an 8 as well.
That was a good vintage day. My local dealer is great. He doesn't do much grading, and calls his "regulars" to look at collections he buys, before he puts them on the shelf.
Only an idiot would have a message board signature.
I bought a 1976 Topps Rod Carew a few years ago for less than $5 raw on Ebay. It graded out PSA 10 but I really don't know the value but it is much greater than $5....likely not greater than all the wasted money spent on other raw purchases though.

<< <i>I've been buying raw for 3 years now and have yet to strike it big (PSA 9 or better).

Yeah, I forgot. It's tomorrow isn't it? I gotta go wave my flag in the yard tomorrow and annoy my neighbor.
'40 Play Ball Charlie Gehringer (advertised as VG or better) for $23.50 including shipping - came back a PSA 6 (SMR $110)
'66 Topps Venezuelan NL ERA Leaders (Koufax and Marichal) advertised as VG-EX for $13.51 including shipping - came back a PSA 4 (probably would sell for $100 to $125).
I have a few more raw pickups that will go in eventually, including some '40 Play Ball high #s that should get 6's (SMR $50, paid $10 plus shipping) and a T-206 Hal Chase that should get a 3 (SMR $75, paid $15 plus shipping).

In 1992 I even had a 1951 Bowman Mantle I purchased on ebay, the guy said he was sure it was a reprint. Looked real to me, I think I paid $86. for it. I then sent it to PSA when they used to be at Frank & Son's, I was wondering if they holdered reprint back then, week later came back as a PSA 6
Lot of great bargain when ebay first started, now all you find is a ton of junk.
