That PSA 10 '79 OPC Gretzky in this month's SMR mag

Has everyone received their copy yet? There's a feature on Gretzky with a pic of the PSA 10 OPC rookie that sold for $80k recently. Does anyone really think that card deserves a 10? Looking at it without the flip, I would have guessed it as a 9.

Anyway, the dollar amount it sold for really blew me away. Especially considering how dead Hockey has been.

The thing that surprised me the most about the card was how it sold in a recent auction (Mastro?) for say, $50k, and then a few months later it sells for 80k???

If I recall the article, it sold for about 62+. The buyer has now turned it around for a quick $18k profit. Simply amazing.
  • Anyone got a picture of it they could post?

That statement only applies to us Americans. Talk to someone in Canada, or Eastern Europe --- hockey is alive and well...

... and, even in the US, the 30 or so markets that have a hockey team are very supportive of the sport (by and large).

I also think we'll see a slow rebuild in fan base ... the rule changes and salary cap are both very good for the sport as a whole.

I can't speak for other markets but here in Boston the Bruins are dead as disco. There isn't even the usual uproar over the team when the season starts. Of course, our owner is a real Munson.

  • Bruins ownership/front office is the worst in the league. There are definite hockey fans in New England --- they are waiting for reason to cheer on the Bruins ...

Perhaps I'm too much of an optimist --- but I do believe hockey will slowly dig itself out of the grave it through itself into.

    I believe.

If I recall, the PSA 10 Gretzly only surfaced after BGS graded one a 9.5. Coincidence???

It's a shame that the Bruins and Blackhawks, both Original 6 teams, have been run with such an utter lack of respect over the last 5-7 years. I like to think, however, that you can't keep a sixer down for too long. Look at Toronto now vs the Harold Ballard days. Granted they may not be (serious) Cup contenders but at least they are respectable. Same goes for Montreal.
  • That gretzky card looks like a 9 to me. For 80K, it should be dead centered, which it isn't.

  • It always semmed a bit of a strectch that card getting the 10. It seems a bit OC and although I understand these came with some rough cuts it's crap they turn away any that have sharp corners. I mean, a few must have made it through the cutter the right way, huh? It's still the card to have though and wish it were mine.

You'll have to pardon me. I have a cheap scanner and the pic in the mag was pretty bad to begin with.

  • I got 57/43 when I measured the centering. So I guess it is right at the 45/55 threshold. Anyway, if I worked for PSA, I probably would have graded it a 9.

Phenominal price! I like rough cuts on the OPC's
but not on this issue due to the colored borders.

The card might look much nicer in person, but judging from the
picture of it in the SMR it looks like I would grade it
'only' a 9 too due to centering. Still would love to own it.

Imagine how many Gretzky RC PSA 8's or PSA 9's one could
    buy for that much coin??

Rick at Mintstate knows how to put together deals, doesn't he.
    Great guy too.
  • To put that price into perspective...

-Memory Lane currently has a '38 Goudey DiMaggio PSA 9 on ebay for $100 k.

-Higher than the '86 Fleer Jordan has ever gotten. The card isn't as rare, but consider how much more popular basketball is to hockey and the significance of Jordan.

-Any other 80's OPC PSA 10 is worth 5-10% of that at most (Roy, Lemieux, Yzerman).

    Just amazing...

  • MooseDog - it's too bad the Burns pic isn't showing up on my screen - you nailed it. Definitely seperated at birth.
