Long time lurker

I have been watching this board along with another for quite a while now and have learned a great deal about the hobby just by reading the posts. I collect mostly Football and Basketball cards of Hall of Famers and just found out that the site www.vintagecardprices.com now covers all sports from 1960-1989 and not just baseball. I have not joined as a paying member yet but use the want list feature and it has been great made a few purchases using their system on ebay. Is anyone here a paying member and what do you think of the price features of the system. I have heard but not sure that VCP is doing a deal where every member that signs up and creates a want list and collection will get a trial upgrade for 2 weeks, can any one else confirm this rumor.

Thanks and look forward to your comments

    Welcome hof

Glad to see you went from lookin to cookin on the boards.

I'm clueless about that "membership" thing - but I do have a question - why do I have to pay for the privilege of being a customer?

Good luck and I hope you have a good stay here.

not sure, I have a freee membership there as well which is a joke. I can't even figure out have to check ended auctions. Do I need to become a paying member before I can even view how to search old ended auctions?

yes, you have to subscribe to the service. I"ve done so since June and think it is well worth it- it helps me both with buying and with pricing of dupes.

  • Welcome.

I got excited what FF versions they list but then found out they list versions of the glossy that were not made. I emailed them to offer help. Interesting site.

I've emailed them with about a dozen tweeks and clarifications, they've always implemented them within 24 hours with a note of thanks.
After putting my want list on there I've all but abandoned ebay searches- for some reason they find cards I can't, and haven't missed any.

  • Just received a email from them. Sent some FF info to update their lists. Hate to think someone is looking for the next few years for a card that doesnt exist.

  • I took Griffins advice and just became a paid member and must say WOW!!! As soon as I upgraded all the prices filled in on My Collection and it gives totals for cost, current card value, and net. Then you can view the card and a page shows up with all the grades and last sale figure. If you click on that then a list of all the latest auctions refreshes with links to the auctions themsleves so you can see the card that sold. Seems like the data for Football and Basketball has just started being implemented into the site and they have sales for most of my cards because HOF's sell fairly often on eBay. Looked around in the baseball section and it is loaded with price information because they have been tracking that a lot longer. Thanks Griffing for giving the site a good review and I have found a new toy for my hobby habit.

Just be aware that it basis the value of your collection on the last sale. The last sale can be a low end card, 0 feedback seller, no scan, etc. so it's best to always check things out. Same with the high sale, than can be the result of shilling, a hidden auction house reserve, or a p**sing match between 2 collectors.
I have the site book marked with instructions to my wife and family to use it to get an idea of what everything is worth, should anything befall me. If just one widow is saved from getting .10 on the dollar from some loon with a wad of cash I think the site has done it's job.

    Hi Anthony
Is that a priceguide type thing?

If so - nevermind on the question - I thought we were talking about buying cards.

Anyone else's spam radar going off? Maybe I'm wrong, and I apologize if I am, but it seems strange that someone's first post is to seek confirmation of a "rumor" of a membership special at VCP -- and their second post is an enthusiastic and detailed endorsement of the services the site has to offer.

Again, I could be wrong, but I'm a little suspicious since VCP has previously used these boards to advertise.

I hope we're not being played for fools.

I didnt want to say anything but I agree 100% It sure looks like a meat like product
  • I assure you that there is no affiliation with me and vintagecardprices what so ever and I have no envolvement with the company. I just made mention of it because I found them through a Google search and read through these boards and even did a search and nothing came up. So I thought by making a post I could get some information about them before I paid to join which Griffin supplied that made up my mind. I am not here on their behalf making a post to try and get you to join that is entirely up to you. There was another site cardpricer and they have a free 2 week trial but no information on Football and Basketball and basically useless for my collecting habits.

  • Please leave CardPricer out of these discussions. I do not even want to being to engage in conversations about the product in places where it's not relevant.

I agree completely. Cardpricer does not look functional at all.
  • I just checked out VCP and it seems like a decent idea for the fun of it. One problem, the usability sucks. Entering cards leaves much to be desired. For instance ....

If you want to receive alerts for a particular card they ask you what grades and by what grader you're looking for. Okay, but what if I'm not just looking for a PSA 8? What if I'd be interested in anything from PSA from a 4 up to a 10? How does it work? It does not say.

    Arthur
  • Arthur,

If you enter a card by the grade and grader it give you an email notice when that card comes available in auction in the grade you specified or higher. I entered on my list a 1958 Topps Jim Brown in PSA 4 and got emailed when 2 PSA 6 or available on Ebay and won one of the two auctions. It was great it had a link that took me right to the auction. Also if you look at your want list and click on view cards it shows you status of which ones there is an auction currentley happening.

So then you would just put your cards as a 4 and you will get notified for that and anything higher.

    Hello,
To be explicitly clear here, I own and operate CardPricer.com. I am sorry you feel that CardPricer is not functional; however, I hope that we are doing something good with our product. We launched at the National in Anaheim less than four months ago (if my math is correct). Our user base is now upwards of 3870 users; and, a number of features that have been and always be free to use. Please keep in mind that we are in beta at this time. I do not want to piggy back on this forum and use it as a free advertising mechanism. I will be glad to expand on what I just said through appropriate channels.

If you, or anyone who reads this has questions about our products, please feel free to contact me at ted-A-T-cardpricer.com. I am a pre-war vintage collector as well, so i love to actually talk about the cards. Additionally, I am personally at many of the major trade shows, and if you ever see me walking around or sitting at a dealer table, please feel free to introduce yourself and ask questions (i'm not hard to pick out, I wear a blue, red, or white CardPricer t-shirt).

  • I am in the business of the website design and did some checking up on your site. For one reason which I found odd was how can a website with almost 4000 members have practically no posts in their forums? I found that very strange to have such a large community and nobody saying a thing. Then I checked your traffic on Alexa which is to highly ranked for a site like yours so I have come to a conclusion about you and your company. You are a fraud!!! I am sure you bought webtraffic to boost your Alexa score and there is no way you have almost 4000 members.

So to conclude I would never give your site a penny for being a liar #1 and secondly you have price information on only about 70 different baseball card sets out of 20,990 sets in your system. So by my calculations it takes 4 months to do 70 sets that means you will have them all done with price information in the year 2106. You better pick up the pace if you want to be alive to get your project completed before you die. And when that gets completed do you have to go back to the first set you did pricing on and update it? Talk about a serious lag in price information. Another thing your site is not even secure when you go to the membership page it tries to give you an SSL for Google. You better take some of that money some person gave you and make some improvements on your site. Because if anybody tries using a credit card to pay are opening themselves up to potential identity theft and a run up credit card.

I will stick with www.vintagecardprices.com the site is secure and they have price information on over 1000 sets now that gets updated daily. A class operation that in this web designers mind is the place to go for this hobby. So any of you on this forum beware of cardpricer or you open your self up to potentail theft.

  • I think it already is standing on it own because there is nothing there for any one to use. Good luck and take some remedial classes on how to build a website. No secure certificate for credit card transactions are you joking it's about $100.00 to give your potential customers a little piece of mind. Or are you waiting to bet out of beta before you are wiling to put up the extra cash?

  • For your clarification, we use AES encryption, closely related to SSL. We believe it is the better choice. Our site is hosted at Rackspace, our credit card processing is through Bank of America and Cybersource. I do not believe I will be making any more comments in this thread. For more information on AES: http://www.bitzipper.com/aes-encryption.html and http://www.winzip.com/aes_info.htm. I would suspect that many people here are familiar with WinZip.
