US Local "Trade Dollars" - How would you classify?

It seems like a number of non-sovereign organizations have issued trade dollars worth $1 in trade. Some of these expire after they year they are issued. Here are some that I've come across:

Hawaii: Various islands had trade dollars for a while, e.g. Maui Dollar, Kauai Dollar, Kona Dollar, Hawaii Dollar etc. 1970s and older?
Maui: 1992-present Maui Trade Dollar
Los Angeles: 1981 Trade "Birthday Dollar"
Alaska: Various Trade Dollars
Seattle 1962 Century 21 Exposition Trade Dollar

How would you classify these? Even though Maui calls their coin a trade dollar, it seems like the numismatic meaning of "Trade Dollar" is coins issued by soverign governments for use abroad. Would all these be considered So Called Dollars, Trade Dollars or something else?

Tokens if anyone actually accepted them. Medals if they had no commercial use.

I just ran across the silver Maui Trade Dollars and they seem very collectible however very little information seems to be available on them. Are there good websites for them? Also PCGS also won't grade them so I've been thinking about getting some slabbed by ICG. The Universaro looks cool too.

after coming back from my honeymoon, I bought a few silvers, I had a b1tch of a time finding an official seller. I think there's a seller on ebay who does maui trade dollars who is from the island and is connected with their chamber of commerce, Ill see if I can scare it up....

hey Zoins, put on your PM.

here's the seller on ebay. Link to seller

I contacted mike, I think he's got a full list of coins you can get from him on an order sheet he can send out.

Just focusing on the silver coins, it seems like that would be a nice set, though GOOD LUCK trying to find any of the early silver coins. they're fairly rare I think.
    anyway.... Good Luck !

    Municipal trade currency.

There are thousands of them and there are already a couple hundred collectors who call them this.

They are technically tokens and one might make an argument that some should be called "state trade
currency", but they do have a name and are cataloged by J. G. Cote.
    tempus fugit extra philosophiam.
  • Good for tokens. Most of them were good for one dollar in trade with the local merchants during a specific time period. I don't think they would be classed as So-Called-Dollars because I don't believe many if any of the So-Called actually carried denominations.
