This outstanding sterling silver medal celebrates the 1897 Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. I believe it to be a smaller version of the official Royal Mint issue designed by engraver T. Brock.
The medal features the popular "Young Head / Old Head" design that shows Her Majesty at the start of her reign in 1837, and 60 years later -- dressed in her famous "widow weeds" (in perpetual mourning for her beloved consort, Prince Albert).
If my research holds water, fewer than 20,000 of the 56 mm medal were struck. (These were issued in a red leather case with a clasp, embossed in gold with the British Crown and the dual dates 1837-1897.) I'm not certain how many of these smaller pieces were struck, but I imagine the mintage was similar.

I'd better focus on the 1901 Vicky type set for a while longer.
