First Submission Blues

Recent member, first time poster:

I join the ranks of those disappointed with the results of their first submission:

1 04535373 1960 TOPPS 563 MICKEY MANTLE ALL STAR 6
2 04535374 1960 TOPPS 250 STAN MUSIAL N/A 7
3 04535375 1960 TOPPS 561 AL KALINE ALL STAR 8
4 04535376 1961 TOPPS 290 STAN MUSIAL N/A 5
5 04535377 1979 TOPPS 115 NOLAN RYAN N/A 9
6 04535378 1979 TOPPS 116 OZZIE SMITH N/A 8OC

Without having any basis for my predictions, I conservatively was expecting one or two grades better on all but 2 of the cards I submitted. I think I got particularly spanked on the 1979 Smith since I thought (without measuring) that it may have met the criteria for a PSA 9 outright. I wasn't expecting the equivalent of a PSA 6.

With an eye towards selling, for the veterans on this board, does it make sense to submit HOF/star baseball cards from the 1960 Topps set if one does not expect any better than a PSA 6? (I'm trying to temper my future expectations.) I've looked at the completed auctions on eBay and cannot tell what is the best course of action.

Finally, on a promotion like that offered in November, how strict is PSA on accepting cards that may receive grades that result in values in excess of $75?

    Hi Calley

    First off - welcome!

On the grades - they don't look that bad to me.

I would like to see the Ryan when ya get it back - a 9 is really nice.

Are you using a 10X loupe?

I'm really not sure about your question on the 60s and 6s - if the 6 is a slider and could get a 7 - my guess is that it would be better to sell it raw as Nrmt and not get killed with a 6?

    Good luck

Thanks for the feedback. I take it from your comments that a card from the 1960 set is only worth grading if one expects a 7 or higher. I thought there may be some benefit to grading even if one gets a lower grade for the Yaz rookie, Mays, Clemente, etc. There seem to be lots of people touting raw cards on eBay, and I thought it might be worth having the PSA grade to validate one's assessment of a card they are trying to sell. I understand there is a cost-benefit to all of this, but if I can get them graded for $6, it might be worth it.

I'll have to get back with you on a scan of the Ryan. I'll either need to get access to a scanner or buy one.

By the way, I had not used a loupe to review my cards before sending them in. I'll have to add this to my list of things to buy.

with out seeing the 60's i think you did pretty well for your first submission. the 79's are tough because of centering issues. Read carefully how they determine the difference between 8,9,10. If you notice there are very slim differences between them. There are some of us that are real good at spotting the 10's out of the lots. I generally just take my chances with what I send in since they are generally very modern cards or hard to find items. But it can be done. I submitted three 97 inscriptions (Elway, Sanders and Marino) all came back 10's. I bought them raw off ebay and packaged them right away to be graded. Never inspected them as they were going into my HOF Auto set anyway.
