When you're an idiot

Like me and buy some raw cards off of Ebay and they are stated Near Mint to Mint and they come creased and VG at best do you ask for a refund? Well I did and the seller without a question said sure I will give you a full refund. I then asked about the return shipping. He said I had to cover that.
Why should I have to cover that if he significantly stated the cards were in better shape?
It is only $4.00 but I am pissed. The guy has 4300 feedback and a 99.8% so I thought I was in the clear. Friggin' power seller so I am hosed with Ebay.
So, my question is, do I b1tch some more or just suck it up. The principle is killing me.

sorry that happened to you. I could see the cards coming as ex/mnt to n/mnt. But vg and some with crease? no way.

edited to add: this is a very good reason why it is best to have 2 ebay accounts. a buying acct and a selling acct. this way you need not jepordize the selling one when you get the retally neg.
In fact, I received a raw Emmitt card today that was stated as a "beautiful sharp, cornered card". It turned out to have sharp corners but the left edge was peeled up. I emailed the seller and told him if this card is beautiful Im just not seeing it. He was cool though, he said to keep it and he would send me another.

Really? why don't you expand on that. I wouldn't want to take what you said wrong. You know like how you took what i said wrong the other day?

About 2 weeks ago I won a set of zips discs ( 50 total ) that were listed as MINT. In actuality each disc had at the very minimum dinged edges, and at worst dings, creases, and major staining.
The seller was unresponsive to 4 or 5 emails before I had to file a misrepresented dispute with paypal. Since then he has ducked, dodged, argued, yelled, and lied to me and paypal about everything he could think of related to and not to the auction.
In the end I am going to get stuck with return shipping for junk that was misrepresented. It took fighting like you cant believe just to get him to understand he has to pay for initial shipping. He wanted to issue a refund just on the sale price, not even original shipping.
He has threatened me if he receives anything but the original discs back, and been belligerent throughout the entire process. I just hope paypal steps up to the plate and automatically issues the refund upon receipt of tracking info and doesnt leave it for this whackaloon to do so himself, otherwise Im out auction total, original shipping, AND return shipping.
The seller is also one of those feedback hostage sellers who apparently will give retalitory negative feedback. I may have to take one for the team and give him a first class negative just on principle even if I know one is coming in return.

<< <i>Im tired of dishonest people. I have bought many "mint" raw cards on ebay and have only been happy with two that come to mind. "Mint condition" is a very loosely used term >>
Maybe it was chewed on and had a minty flavor.
I usually assume 1 or 2 grades lower than given in the item description, unless I know the seller. I've found the grades are often inflated by 1 grade, but sometimes 2.
On another note, I did have the opposite happen once. I bought a 1948 Bowman Sammy Baugh raw from someone who typically sold other antiques, etc. They listed the item multiple times on eBay, described as "very good shape". Nobody ever went after it, and they lowered the price, so I ended up getting it for $100, and it's a PSA 6 now.

Not there is anything wrong with that

Matt, you should try purchasing cards from the UK. Talk about misunderstanding. Excellent as a grade means two entirely different things (there it's NM-MT to MT while here it's just above VG). Centering never plays a role in the grading of a card in the UK while here it's a focal point. You've really got to hone your "grade through the scan" skills. There simply isn't a lot of professional grading and encapsulating going on over there; it isn't a priority. It seems to be more about collecting the cards than it is about obtaining pristine specimens of the card.
That sucks FavreFan. There's really no way to avoid situations like that. Anyone, no matter how good their feedback is, can misrepresent an item and stiff you. As far as your intial question goes, unfortunately for you the best thing you can do (for yourself) is to suck it up. Getting into a pissing match over email/phone with a seller (or buyer, for that matter) is only going to succeed in ruining a few of your days and increasing your blood pressure. I understand how you feel about the principle of the whole thing but there's no point in running yourself through the washboard over this guy. All you can do to prevent this from happening to someone else is to leave the neg.
I, for one, always check dates/times on negs to see if they're legit or relaliatory. Retaliatory negs don't scare me off if the other feedback is good.

So buy my stuff!
That said I would throw the cards in an envelope and send them back for the cost of one stamp. If the seller was so concerned about the quality of his merchandise, he would have covered the return shipping cost. Otherwise, if it comes back all mangled - then it's his fault.
I actually try to avoid Powersellers when it comes to cards. I prefer hobbyists - those (like me) who trade for fun - not profit. Powersellers are usually out to maximize profit - which means that they cut corners on packaging and more often than not, card descriptions.
<< <i>I do have two ebay accounts and that is the reason for the IDIOT comment. I used my selling account. I AM AN IDIOT >>
ive done the same thing..
Throw them in a Cuisenart, hit puree and then mail back whats left.
<< <i>I offer to cover return shipping. Out of 300+ transactions I have had to use it twice - and once was my own fault.

Ouch, that hurts.
I am a PowerSeller and a lot of people on here have bought from me,
and of course, I primarily deal in graded cards, not raw, but when I do sell raw cards I usually have two dealers look at my cards and I list it at the lowest grade that it was given. Of course, I have over 7000 positive feedbacks, so I take this very serious (yes, I like the $$'s, but try to keep everyone happy). Very rarely ever run a reserve auction, most NR and let them fly.
I rarely have had to refund and have picked up both directions, most of mine were me doing something stupid, swapping cards and just shipping the wrong card to the wrong person. (usually heavy shipping days when 100 items closed in one day)
But I still have fun doing this, so don't be afraid of ALL PowerSellers, some of us run legit operations and you get what you expect.
I just put up a bunch of cards tonight (1948 Swell Babe Ruth Story cards, DiMaggio & Koufax autographed items, and some non-sports cards)
Most of the auctions had pictures of graded cards, front and back, so you know exactly what you are getting, both graded and the actual card for those that buy the card and not the holder.
The baseballs I am putting up, have taken the time to get JSA certs on them (HOF'ers)

Leave the seller a negative and take a hit for the team. I just took another one last week. I purchased this lot and this is what they look like. While the seller at least made mention of "several nicked" corners he also stated most were still NM/MT. Note how the seller arranged the cards is the scan so the corner wear is not seen (I guess I failed to learn from my experience descibed above). I couldn't get anything refunded from him so it is off to the Paypal gripe box and will see what happens. After a couple exchanges with the seller I finally said refund or negative. He sent me a note saying he would respond in kind.... we are both seeing red now. Love these characters.
As everyone else has stated, I usually shy away for most sellers claiming there cards are Mint. Unless I know the Seller and have already done business, 9 times out of 10 the cards are going to come well below Mint.
But the flip side of the coin is that I love nothing better than the E-bay Seller who sells say antiques or some such and then finds some cards and lists them in very good or even excellent condition. This term being to them nothing to do with actual grading just a general word for them. I have had dozens of buys like this where I gambled a bit because the cards looked decent in the scans and have got the cards for near nothing and have had them come back from PSA as high as Mint 9's, and sold for hundreds of dollars. Always a risk, but what in life isn't !!!!
Neil
Have another question I need some advice on. Last month I won three lots of Non Sports Cards on E-Bay from a dealer I had never done business with, total 28 cards paid $130.00. They were advertised as NM in the Sellers opinion (Nice CYA). I paid Top Dollar because I needed a couple for one of my sets and was hoping to PSA a few and off set my costs. So anyway I recieve the cards and they are nice looking but all with damage or defects, a couple with gum stains all over the front, almost all with at least one bent corner, about half with edge paper seperation, and other bad stuff, you get the pisture. I e-mailed the Seller and pointed out all of these defects, etc. The highest I think any would grade is EX-MT 6, most probably 4's or 5's. So anyway I contact the Seller he says no problem, return for refund. I did, He Did, no problem.
Here's the Kicker. I am looking on E-Bay a couple of days ago and here are the same three auctions listed with absolutely no changes. He used the same listings, just hit the Re-List option. These cards are not as he is advertising and he knows it. So what is my obligation ?????????????????
A couple of the auctions have numeruos bids and I know most of the Bidders, most being customers of mine. Do I do nothing and just let the next guy go through the same crap ????
Any comments.
Thanks
Neil
It would be nice to warn the potential buyers of the problem.
But if you do, you are guilty of Auction Interference, and eBay treats this as a serious offense.
To be honest, they treat that offense as more serious that "materially not as described", go figure.
You could e-mail the Seller and remind him that he did not change the description, but don't mention contacting any of the Buyers.
Honestly since they relisted, they probably don't want to hear.
You could contact eBay Live Help and see what they recommend?

Yeah, I see this as a no win, no matter what. And I know not to contact the buyers, E-Bay frowns in a big way. Did you get my message about dups of the Dark Shadows Greens in PSA 8 you mentioned you might have?
Thanks
Neil
Out of 2000+ sales on E-bay I've had 5-8 not satisfied, if under a $10 dollar sale I usually send them a refund and tell them to keep the card, not worth the trouble of return ect., over $10 which has only happened twice, I got the card back and and refunded all shipping and costs. I also clearly state in every one of my auctions that I "Do Not Grade cards" and give a description only, as every collector has a different opinion. I think this keeps my headaches way down. And I try to describe the best that I can and leave no flaws or anything else I see out. But every once in awhile I miss something, thus return no questions asked, full refund.
Neil
He finally put up his end of the bargain.
So, now the question is Positive feedback? I am going to say yes because of the refund, what do you say?
