What's your largest increase in grade on a bust out?

I was just curious what anyone's largest increase (or decrease for that matter) in grade on a card you busted out when your resubmitted. That goes from one company to another and within the same company.

  • not a lot of experience with this yet, but I did flip a 1960 Topps Roger Maris from a BVG 7 to a PSA 8.

Not a big deal, but I turned a 1960 Topps Warren Spahn from a BVG 2 to a PSA 4.

I think the big thing to remember is that Beckett used to be utterly ridiculous. My first grading experiences were with Beckett, and boy, do I wish I had a few of those back. Not that PSA is a slacker company, but quite the contrary. I think PSA is right on. I think in the beginning, Beckett was impossible. Then prices rose for high grades. Now, Beckett has slacked. I believe PSA has been the most consistent. I had 1961 Topps Warren Spahn that got a BVG 7.5, that I am convinced would have a shot at a PSA 9.

  • I do not play the crack and resubmit game, but I have cracked out a PSA 3 Kaline rookie, for it to go down to an SGC 10, I at least expected the card to crossover to the same, but not! Luckily, that card was not one I was looking to sell, I was more interested in the framing the SGC slabs provide!

SGC 6 to a PSA 8 which for the series I did it within between 3 and 500.00 dollars.

the card was undergraded it was a sweet 8

i then tried to take an SGC 7 hoping for yet another 8 but when i got the card in hand it looked more like a PSA 5. You win some you lose some.

    Good for you.
  • I bought a 1960 Topps Tony Kubek PSA 5 and thought it looked amazing. Sent it in again and came back a PSA 7. My best raw to graded venture came when I bought a very nice '69 Topps Mike Shannon at a card show. It came back from PSA as a 9 NQ. Low pop of four. Raw at $3 to over $300 for the graded mint 9. I was happy......

My 1989 UD Griffey went from a PSA 8 to a PSA 10. Of course I orginally submitted it when 10s were going for $2000+. So they weren't handing out many 9s or 10s at that time.

I've seen a major dealer get a PSA 5 into a PSA 9 holder. Not kidding. It was a'64 Willie Mays that was an SGC 92 and looked sweet.
The buyer tried to cross it from SGC 92 to PSA 9. He got back a
PSA 5. It's looked like maybe psa thought they saw a subtle paper wrinkle on the surface. My friend asked a Colorado dealer to do him a favor and resubmit. He got the 4 point bump into a PSA 9 holder the next day. This happened four to five years ago at a Sportsfest show. I doubt anything funny went on behind the scenes for that to happen. I think on a second review a different opinion was just reached. Again, I just witnessed it.
    (not slamming psa here either)

I typically don't play the crack and resubmit game but I've witnessed some two point grade bumps up and two point hammers down on the grading scale. Not too often but just on a few cards.

Only two stick out in my mind... I had an '88 Donruss Glavine BGS 8.5 and an '89 Topps Tiffany Sheffield BGS 8.5 both get cracked, resubmitted to PSA, and both came back PSA 10's. Both BGS slabs were the older style... again, when they were much tuffer.

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

I hear that the older style (w/grades) BVG have a good shot at an increase because of their tougher grading standards back then. Would that ring true in almost all cases?

How can you tell the difference between the older Beckett vs the newer Beckett? I used to think that it was the old flip did not have the subgrades on the front and the new flip does. Now, after searching, I am finding another difference. For instance, some BVG 7 flips are a "bronze" color (with no subgrades on the front), while other BVG 7 flips are white (with no subgrades on the front). Same with BVG 8 (silver vs white). Where there 3 different stages to Beckett flips (ie colored flips for 7 and up; then white flips; then subgrades on the front). Could someone clarify?

    Anybody know?

  • well I can't comment on the BVG, but with BGS slabs, you are correct that the old flip has the grades on the back while the newer flip has the grades on the front.
