Game-Used Jersey Prices and Info

Anyone here knowledgeable about game-used jerseys? I don't mean cards, but the whole shmegeggie. I was at a show in San Antonio this weekend and one notable item was a Larry Bowa home jersey. I assume it was real, but I have little exposure to these things I couldn't say. It had a tag on the bottom of the front tail marked '81-1' which I assume means the first uni set for 1981, and it had his last name stitched in script at the inside back of the neck part. It was a zipper front, which surprised me, but I never really looked at the closure before. It was polyester which I assume was really miserable to wear in the humid PHL summers on the Vet's turf. It looked like it had a fair amount of wear, but no holes or anything that I noticed. And some of the red had bled from the patches into the white fabric around them, so I'd take that as an indication of age. The price was $400, which I regard as a fair price for a 25-year-old piece of a guy who was a 5-time all-star and at one point considered the best SS in the game. Anyone have any input on this item? And no, I didn't get the dealer's name.

  • Thats about an average price, maybe a bit high. The thing to do is purchase it and put it in a Hunt auction in PA. There Phillie stuff always garners top dollar......

$400 is actually very cheap for a vintage jersey from a member of the 1980 championship team. Bowa is still extremely popular here in the Philly area. I've seen his jerseys sell for double that. The big problem is that there are quite a few fake 1981 Phillies jerseys floating around. I'm not an expert by any means but I've read and seen enough to know that you have to be very careful with 1981 Phillies jerseys. Obviously, the Rose and Schmidt jerseys are the most often faked, but Bowa is a pretty popular player along with guys like McGraw, Maddox, etc.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld where George suggests that the New York Yankees switch to all cotton uniforms and the uniforms shrink in the rain.

  • I do like to collect the real game used stuff, not the cards. A good site to read at is game used universe. I know there are some hardcore Philly collector's there. The price is about right if it is legit. You really have to do your homework on that kind of stuff. One reason I like it. Have to research the year. Look for game photo's. Make sure the tagging, letter script ....ect is all correct.
  • Should be a Wilson jersey. Just look for stitch marks to be sure that the jersey hasnt been altered (number change or number replaced) and Bowa should have worn a size 40 or 42. Kind of hard to mock up knits except for changing nameplates and numbers. The Wilson tag should also be a type 3 tag with the trademark at the botton of the n in Wilson which was used from 79 to 86......
