It is a shame that PCGS decided to discountinue the TrueView service. The photography rounded out the service they provided to the collectors. It would be nice if the powers - to - be would reconsider their decision. I understand about the "bottom line" but sometimes customer service and PR / good will is the best advertisement.

That's truely a shame. I can honestly not see any reason now for me to give any money to PCGS. Their excellent TrueView service was the one and only thing that still had me using them.

You forgot to add the lack of ability to tell the difference between AU55-MS62 on anything more than 150 years old.
The detail in the massive images was what really got me hooked on TrueView. When you spend every waking hour scrutinizing 15mm coins it's pretty darn nice to pop up a detail accurate image that takes up the entire computer screen. Images like that are excellent tools for attribution, excellent tools. TrueView was not essential by any means but it was nice.
The first photo below is of a 15.5mm circle, the size of a Capped Bust Half Dime. The second photo is a die crack on a half dime, the 9 in the date is less than 1.5mm tall. The third photo is a portion of the same half dime showing the extra serif of C. The extra serif is roughly .25mm long.
This is really too bad. As much as I don't care for PCGS's customer service or fee schedule, the TrueView service was exceptional, especially in light of how horrendous the NGC equivalent is (and it's not even close to being an equivalent).

I wonder about the young man they hired from England to do the photography. I don't remember his name, but I know he moved from England to the U.S. just to take the job as the PCGS photographer. Is he now out of work in a foreign country?

All seriousness, I thought many of the images did look cartoonie, but a few, I felt, did really bring out the look of the coin. I have a few NGC coins that I would like in the PCGS plastic (easier to look at for some of the toned copper, imho) and was going to try crossing, and getting the trueviews (a small gamble if I didn't like them).
Now, no reason to send them in for awhile so they will stay with the white inserts a bit longer.
I do wonder, from a business model, the thoughts behind this....... Obviously, photographer, if alone, makes $xxx,xxx amount/year with bennies. Equipment is already a sunk cost. How much of a delay in the process is it? How many people have to help out? How many coins must be submitted monthly/quarterly/yearly? How many WERE submitted? How much of Phil's time was taken by those that "know" him and wanted to ask about file sizes, when they were ready, etc etc etc?
1) Grading which appears to be too tight 2) Leaders who have consistantly ignored the requests of a large chunk of it's customers 3) Extremely poor customer service 4) Closing the OF 5) Hoky marketing gimmicks (Lynch Dollars, First Strike, etc.) 6) Slow turn around times 7) Dropping a much appreciated photography service
Sounds like ANACS. Is this an indication that JT has a new job?
I have a submission in for TrueView that they received today. They said that my order is in process. Maybe they are accepting all submissions until they make the announcement to the public.
To reiterate, this is one of the BEST services that PCGS offers today. UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE that they decided to do away with this service. It's obviously NOT the profit, because they would have just raised the price to $7,$8 or $10/coin. There is something else involved and I won't be able to sleep unti I know that the f&%# it is. I had 35 lincolns picked out for TrueView service that I was dropping at Baltimore this Friday.
My first stop in Baltimore will be to complain at the PCGS table.
Honest to goodness, I have used NGC for years now until True View came out. I then submitted two huge lots to PCGS and planned on continuing to use them. Now, back to NGC, since they are faster, have the STAR and multi holders, and have better customer service in all aspects.
Too bad for PCGS - bonehead decision on their part.

Actually, I believe Phil is originally from Canada, but was working in England at the time that PCGS hired him.
I had about 20 coins I was planning to send in for a combination of grading/crossover/reholder, and one big incentive was in getting pics done of most of them, I will probably cut that down a lot now.

My useless opinion: PCGS is cutting their corporate throat with this move. Maybe Phil can go to work for NGC. That would boost their business even more than it has recently from other factors previously mentioned.

It's too bad it has been discontinued. To me it was one option for collectors that helped set PCGS apart from the rest of the TPG's.
I wanted to have my 01-s quarter true-viewed but was afraid they would re-holder it out of the green holder or it get lost, so I never sent it in
I'm for pictures.... just include it in submission cost and make it automatic.
