I bought this pin...can anyone ID year for me?

Comments

  • That certainly is a young-looking Mick, the picture seems like it could be from the early 50's, who knows about the manufacture date though? I have a friend who collects Mickey and maybe he can help - I will send him a message.

p.s Either way it looks like an enjoyable piece to add to any collection.
Just glad to be here with everyone.

I would be careful, there are alot of repro buttons and pins on ebay. I would ask for a picture of the back of the pin to see if there is any rust or signs of aging. If its too clean on the back for a 50 to 60 year old pin.I would be leery.

ALWAYS ask for a scan of the back of any pin or buton. pomobileclk hit the nail on the head...
  • I just read the seller's feedback ... he sounds like a real joy. Does anyone else inherently get a bad feeling when a seller, for no real reason, offers up a story as to why they have the item in their possession?

"My buddy bought this at Yankee Stadium in 1952 and it's been forgotten about ever since."

    Right.

Sorry to be a wet blanket blaze, it's not my intention. I hope this all works out for you.

  • hey all..I have pin in my hot little hands. The seller was a twerp, but delivered what looks to be genuine.
I bought it because it looks cool and my patients actually have heard of the Mickimage

My first thought is that the pin is a reproduction. Original Mantle pins from his early playing days generally sell for big bucks, and there are many advanced collectors of Mantle items and/or 1950's baseball pins who clearly did not participate in that auction likely because it is not an original.

It's an early style signature and an early photo, but the button could have been made yesterday. Tough call.

  • ok....nobody pounce on this item, but another listing has it....thinks it is from the 60's. Seller has great feedback. I was thinking about buying this one also...

Since you have it in hand, what does the back of the pin look like?
  • silver/aluminum back...a little tarnished, some scratches....the actual pin is a redish hue.

I think the other one is a repro also... I think that's a common reproduction piece. Clearly, that picture of Mantle is from the early to mid 50's at the latest.

The second seller - I suspect a lot of their auto's are questionable... offering worthless COA's from their store coupled with the line: "OUR AUTHENTICITY IS BETTER THAN PSA/DNA". That line should paint a pretty good picture for you right there.

I have always been a fan of knowing exactly what I am buying and having a very good idea of what it is worth at the time I purchase something. The hobby is, unfortunately, filled with corruption... from counterfeits to fake autographs to altered items to fantasy items (something that never existed until someone recently created it and tried to make appear to be a rare one-of-a-kind piece or something along those lines)... unless you know what to look for, with pins for instance - how the older pins were produced, the materials they are made from, what identifying marks should be on them, and what the counterfeit's look like in comparison to the originals, and most importantly, how much the originals are truly worth (because you cannot buy a $500 pin for $60 as an example) - I would suggest doing some research first so you know exactly what you may or may not be getting.

  • ouch...I bet you are right.
  • Blaze, while $60 is still $60, in terms of the price of a good lesson it's not that bad. It's not like you got shilled up to what the originals go for (if yours is indeed a repro) so it could've been a lot worse. You still have a pretty cool looking pin and I guarantee your future shoppings will be much more intensive and fruitful.

    Enjoy the pin.

  • Arthur, I am still optomistic, since no-one has yet demonstrated that it is a repro. I am willing to accept that they probably are repros, but the whole point of this thread is that 2 sellers are claiming different ages for the same pin and I'm looking for some-one with expertise.
So before everyone consoles me for buying a fake....is there anyone who knows about vintage pins?
  • Blaze, can you post a big scan of the back of the pin?

I think the pin is real but I have never seen it before and don't know the designation.

Like this PM10 Stadium Pin variation of Mantle.

The pin could be a local area commemorative issue from a ball park or some product promotion?

But, I can't find an example of this pin style in any references I have.

When I get a chance, I'm gonna look at a few others.

  • thanks...I can't find it either, but that is one reason I'm not convinced it's a fake. Why make a repro of an un-known pin?

BTW, here is IMO one of the most over-produced/reproduced Mantle pins on the planet.
