Graded Baseballs...

Has the market placed a low priority on non-graded autographed balls? I have a few from childhood that I would like to get rid of, but I am not up on the market standards for authenticated baseball memorabilia.

I have Mantle, Whitey Ford and Nolan Ryan balls, all non-personalized and signed on the sweet spot. PSA charges $100 for the Mantle alone, which is quiet a lot IMO, but that's life.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

  • You might get $100 for the Mantle if not authenticated or you might get $300 if it is. I don't usually sell auto's that aren't authenticated, but I might try it if the profit on the item doesn't justify the fee.

So many forgeries over the last two decades has sort of forced this on the hobby. That said - you are not going to get your $$$ worth, more times than not, unless you get a MINT or better grade on the baseball.

Alternatively, you can list it on Ebay, and then pay $7 or whatever the fee is for a PSA/DNA Quick Opinion. That will give buyers a large amount of comfort and not cost you $100 + S&H
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • You actually have to situations here, authenticating and grading, and they are not the same thing. An authenticated baseball renders an opinion on whether the signature is authentic or not. Grading a baseball not only renders the opinion on the authenticity of the signature but the condition of the ball (toning, fading of the signature, scuffs, etc.). With the Mantle I would suggest grading if the ball and signature are in great condition and authentication at a minimum. Mantle, Ruth, and DiMaggio are the three most forged signatures in baseball and the peace of mind is worth it.

  • depending on grade of ball and autograph the Mantle could get $700 plus. i'd check prices realized on the ford and ryan to see if grading fees are worth it compared to selling price.
