Tiki Barber ----- HOF'er ???

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
Tiki Barber rushed for 115 yards on 17 carries (a 6.8-yard average) and caught three passes for 40 yards. Barber has 9,617 rushing yards and exactly 5,000 passing yards. Barber is just the third player in NFL history with at least 9,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards. The others are Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (12,243 rushing and 5,411 receiving) and Marshall Faulk (12,279 & 6,875).

How often does a guy playing in NY fly under the radar? It has been only the last two seasons that he has gained real national notiriety. Being that he plans to cut off his career after this season..... what do you all think? HOF ????

I'd say yes, for sure. Outstandingly productive and a class act on and off the field.

Edit: We may see both Martin (if he retires as expected at the end of this year) & Barber inducted in the same class. That'd be something to see.

He gets a yes vote for me. Not that my vote counts for anything.

One thing that has hurt Tiki over the years has been his lack of touchdowns. It seems like the Giants have always gone to a bigger back when down near the goal line.

<< <i>I'd have to go no. He needs to pad his stats for a couple more years to get in. >>

I respect that .... BUT ..... did you read the first post in this thread? How much padding does he need to do?

Again, if ya don't think he is worthy is fine by me. image

About 15000 Rush and Recieving yards is good, if Curtis Martin gets in then Tiki should as well as Martin has close to 13000 rush yards and not near as many recieving yards.

Another amazing stat is that Tiki Barber has been the Giants leading rusher in 72 consecutive games. A NFL record as no other back has done that.

Tiki also ranks 3rd all time in average yds. per carry, behind only Jim Brown and Barry Sanders.

Whether he gets in or not he certainly shoots down the notion that any athlete playing in NY is overhyped or overrated. He has become one of the elite running backs this league has seen and done so virtually unnoticed.

    Baseball,

Tiki's body may very well be able to handle another 2 or 3 years, but I dont think that is the point. The man is making a decision that not too many other players even have the ability to make.

How many players retire and are half crippled the rest of their lives ? Too often this goes unseen. Even more too often they are left with no choices outside of the world of football. The game has been the only thing they have in their lives. Many, if not a majority of players dont have options outside of football and continue only because they are not well rounded in their lives to have any viable options outside the game.

I don't think he gets in. His career numbers are impressive, but not enough by themselves. Compare them to Ricky Watters, for example... another great back who is not a HOFer. Tiki has only 2 pro bowls, no rings, and no impactful postseason performances. His personality certainly helps, as does his home town, but he has never had the aura of a feared, top back who MUST be stopped if you want to beat his team. Only a few backs today do: Alexander, LJ, Tomlinson, but you need that reputation unless you have numbers that can't be argued with. He'll likely retire with barely over 10,000 yards, putting him around 17th all-time, in the company of Ricky Watters, Eddie George, and Ottis Anderson. And he'll likely share the same fate as those 3 when it comes time to elect HOFers each year.

    Not a hall of famer.

No, it's not anti-ny bias talking, it's simple objectivity. He's had a very good career, but he's not a HoFer.

A couple of dominant years does not a hall of fame career make...throw in his propensity for putting the ball on the ground and you have someone who doesn't belong in the hall.
  • id say no too..cause he wasnt always the hero, until someone told him to hold the ball differently he fumbled more than me when im drunk...im a big tiki fan and i would like to see him get in but i dont think its gonna happen..

While I'm sure all this is true, players make the decision to play anyway. His played for the past decade and considering that it looks like he hasn't really lost a step, I don't see the reason for leaving specifically now. If he had a super bowl ring, maybe. If he had the HOF locked up, maybe. The latter could be argued but I would bet a large amount in Vegas if I could that he does not get in if he retires after this season. It's not as if his opportunities as a telecaster of some sort is going to go away. He is an articulate guy and I'm sure he'll have plenty of opportunities for the next 30-40 years to pusue that. However, he only has the next 3-4 years (if that) to be an NFL player. After having already put in 10+ seasons, I don't see the point in just walking away now considering that the HOF would be a huge carrot in my opinion. >>

Its not your job or duty to see the reason for leaving specifically now. You are not Tiki Barber. Who are you or anyone else to tell a man when to leave, and what he should or shouldnt do before retiring ? Whether or not YOU see the point, evidently Tiki Barber sees the point in why he is leaving.

Maybe Tiki Barber cares alot less about the HOF than you are any of us do. Maybe he has other things in his life that are of far greater importance. Just because we as fans place such emphasis on rings, HOF, numbers, etc does not mean an intelligent, well rounded man who has other interests in mind thinks as highly of those accolades as we do.

To question his decision based on what you feel is important, or when you feel its time is pretty egotistical if you ask me. By your account you make it seem as if Tiki Barber owes you and everyone else an explanation as to why he is doing what he wants to do. He has nobody to answer to but himself.

Well put Bri, again, I actually agree with you. I had the same feeling when Barry retired. The Giants may know much sooner than the Lions did, but the Lions deserved what they got with that. Tiki a HOF'er, who knows, but he is smart to get out while he still has his knees!

I'd like to know why those who think he belongs in the hall feel that way.

The only reason he's gotten national acclaim the past 2 years is because those are the only years he's been worth talking about.

2 years does not a hall of fame resume make.
  • If Tiki wasn't retiring after this season, I think he'd have the numbers to get in. As of right now, he's borderline(more towards not getting in). He's had more than 2 banner seasons, but the media attention wasn't on him.

    2000-1700+ total yards
    2002-1800+ total yards
    2003-1600+ total yards
    2004-1800+ total yards
    2005-2300+ total yards
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

That is simply not true. You are mistaking the national media finally picking up on Tiki the last two years with him having only 2 banner seasons. I respect your opinion that you don't feel he is a HOF'er .... but your reasoning is flawed.

    Not sure how you figure?

He's had 2 top 5 seasons in rushing yards (three if you count this year, when he likely will either win or be top 3).

His national attention has followed the time when he's been dominant...this year and the 2 prior.

Comparing him to Curtis Martin is quite the insult to Martin, who not only has been putting up big numbers for longer periods of time, but he's been putting it in the end zone as well (and not putting the ball on the ground a la Tiki).

Tiki will have a great career as a broadcaster, and I admire him for walking away before the game beats him up too bad, but he doesn't get courtesy points for 'what could of been'.

Well I agree with that 100% but Tiki's has had many very good to great years. I guess if you are going to use the word "dominate" then obviously you don't agree on the HOF. However, you can't discount what he has done which was pointed out in the first post in this thread.
