Coin related Gift ideas for a YN.....any suggestions?

SwampboySwampboy Posts: 13,094 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's time for me to think about the upcoming Holidays. I have an eleven year old YN (with a younger sibling who appears to be getting The bug).
Any suggestions for a book , or subscription, or membership of some kind.
Coins are already covered as they trickle down all year long. I guess even coin albums would possibly work. Just thinkin'.
Appreciate any advice..
Thanks

  • If you don't already get CoinWorld, that would be a great start... Also, for an 11-year-old, a few albums would be cool too. Maybe buy a first slabbed coin. Get them caught on the TPG bug early!

Get them their own personal magnifyer/loupe with lanyard, etc. You can personalize the lanyard with birth zodiac, name tag (those little license plates) numismatic related parafanalia, etc. It will be useful for other endeavers also...looking at bugs or whatever.

They will be proud to have their own method for up-close of veiwing of those trickle-downs.

    Books are always good!

If he already has a recent Red Book, how about something on his favorite series (if he has one)?

Or, any of the Whitman/Bowers Red Book of. . . (Morgan Dollars, Double Eagles, etc.)?

Or, the Judd pattern book - lots of pictures. . .

Great idea. Add one of the books on type coins and you have a winner of a gift.

Kidding aside. In this computer age the idea of making coin collecting, or for that matter any type of collecting a visual interactive hobby is a fact.
Photo shows or web sites all take photo equiptment. And for us that take part in the registery good pictures of our coins is and art form, I know I am still trying to learn.

Plus it is a very good idea to have good pictures of all valuables in case of a loss.

Another idea if you haven't done it already is birth year proof or mint sets, or too go whole hog an all coin set for their birth year.

I'm prompted tonight to say thanks for the good advice I got in this thread. I just hung up from talking with with my YN. (11 y.o.)

He's out trolling ebay looking to fill holes in his 7070 (thanks for the advice RYK and goose3).
Calls me up and wants to know if he should have his Dad pull the trigger for him.

Gotta just image What else can ya do? I had him add two forum members to his favorites sellers. image

Few other notes; found a nice B & L 5X loupe for around ten bucks, he loves it.. Thanks WoodenJefferson wherever you is.

cullenbryant.... right on! I got his 7 year old little brother on of those Bronze Bald Eagle Wildlife Medals from the Mint. Big Smiles.

For good measure I slipped them a red book as they headed out, good tip DaveG.

Anyhow, I warned him about raw coins on ebay and told him he needs to get into town and hook up with a good dealer. There's a few in Big Sky Country.

    Happy New Year!!

You can't beat a Red Book and a Dansco 7070. Pat them on the back and tell them to go for it!

Congrats on snagging another victim......I mean "collector". image
