Sorry, but I don't LIVE on ebay so I don't always see everything every day there. 90+% of the time, I ignore the ebay items here (generic or POS items), however, occassionally, there is a post (with the item in the title) and stating ebay. I go and watch (and sometimes bid if the price is still right).
This board should be for the MAJORITY of people....it shouldn't try to be so crisp and cut as to only a few people enjoying it. That means that not 100% of the people will be 100% happy 100% of of the time. To me, that's fine.
It is just the RUDE people who have multiple threads for selling, or buying, and bump them multiple times a day that is really wrong (imho). The rest, I chalk up to the people's lack of common sense and courtesy (and, choose not to work with those people).
You mentioned, "...OTHER than people having multiple for sale threads that should otherwise be combined,...
Does that mean that if someone creates a FS thread one day, a different thread for something else can't be created the next day, or 2 days later, etc? Should any new items be incorporated into the first thread so that only 1 FS thread exists for each member?
OR
This rule really only applies to those that create more than 1 thread on a given day?
Still wondering why it's OK to sell on the PCGS Set Registry Forum when you have the BST Forum? Easy way to bypass the BST rules is to move your selling to that forum. Now 'WTB' threads are popping up there, along with trade proposals, is that OK too? Also to the folks that do sell there, do you remember the rules? Read them as some (most?) of you are routinely breaking them.
It's not the BST Ark. You don't get to have one of each.
<< <i>My soultion is simple and fair. You have one post per day; don't squander it. >>
This does seems best for all involved, including the monitor, who can say "We have a basic rule: One post per day. Deal with it" and let it go at that. (and for me, I'd just ttt my post once per day, just like I usually do, and deal with all the other stuff through PMs) No muss, No fuss.
My preferences are: - Allow one buying thread and one selling thread. I don't see a need to combine them as it won't make any real difference in the number of threads. - Thread title should state ebay/FSH/WTB etc. - PMs must be enabled if you post on BST. - When your item is sold, edit the thread title to show that it's gone. - The original poster gets one reply to his/her thread(s) per day. That can be a TTT or a reply to a question. If you have to answer more than one question, edit the original post. - "For sale here" items must include a price. If you don't know what you want, take it to ebay. I'm OK with Barndog's "$X obo". - All BST policies/guidelines permanently stickied.
One I haven't seen mentioned is "No threadcrapping". Problem is I don't know how to define it. - If A is selling something for $100 and B replies in A's thread that he has one for sale for $90, or if B says "$100 is too much", that's threadcrapping. - If A is selling a raw 2006 unc silver eagle for $250, saying it might grade MS70 and comparing it to the reverse proof in order to hype it, and B replies saying that's ludicrous and you can get one anywhere for under $20, that's not threadcrapping. - If A is a new member, offering a very valuable coin for $5,000 with no photo and has no references, and B replies saying people need to be careful, that's not threadcrapping either.
I know it when I see it but it's tough to define. I guess the difference is whether the post is intended to look out for other members, or whether it's meant to undermine the offer, aggravate the OP, or other annoying intent.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
RYK's suggestion of 1 post to the b/s/t PER day per member would seemingly be a remedy if the software here would permit that to happen.
There are some other decent guidelines posted but with such a Large amount of members, I don't see why people need to have more than 1 thread even if you are buying and selling. It's not that hard to put something in your title to cover both subjects.
I truly think the ebay stuff is what is out of hand here. Look at the board any given time of the day and generally over half of it is ebay. I come to the board here because I want to stay the hell away from ebay.
I also don't think that people should be advertising other websites here. If it's not a coin or a directly related numismatic item that is for sale or trade, it does not belong here IMO.
<< <i>I still say NUKE ALL EBAY threads!!!!!!!!! >>
Everyone probably has certain searches that they go to each day on Ebay. Spending hours searching everything would be a huge pain. Members that put items up that are outside of a usual search are helping out other members find a coin that could be desirable. Case in point would be fiftycents who now has some nice walkers posted here that are on Ebay. Without his post how many people would know about his coins without doing a complete Ebay coin search ?
I agree with the thought that a Ebay post should be nuked if Ebay is not in the title. Prices on coins. That would be real nice.
One post per day, so post wisely. You can bump your own post or bump a friends, but you cant do both. Ebay threads should have Ebay in the title (seems like common sense) How about a cap on the number of days a particular thread can be left on the board? There are some in the hundreds, seems unnecessary to prolong them indefinitely.
If mentioned in the title. It's the other abuses, the ones that knock other members' post off the first page by continually having their post being bumped for whatever reason.
One post per day is the best idea that I've heard so far.
I disagree with one point. I think that if a potential buyer asks a question that many others have or might ask, it's OK to answer it publicly in the thread. This will save time and get the info. out to everyone at the same time. >>
I can agree with this to a point...most often I've used my one TTT to respond to a buyer/seller. This gets the info out as well as serves as a ttt for that particular day. However, I can see if you're selling something that's wildly popular you might want to be able to put that into the body of the text as a response instead of PM-ing everyone individually with the same information. Perhaps the seller could just use the edit function and put this in the body of the text: After multiple inquiries...blahblahblah... and then use the one ttt to bring up the edited advertisement.

That makes sense, I never go to the latest ttt to see if the thread has been updated, just assume the seller put it in the first post. No one wants to check out each ttt to see if new stuff is in one of them.

I'm ex-military. I like rules more than a lot of people. But, some people are wanting to order everything THEIR way and not look at the big picture....
There are just a few actual problems occuring that need fixed....the whole thing doesn't need tweaked else some people just won't use it (well, that may be good considering some of the people).
Next thing you know, someone will want to have all posts approved before they appear and maybe even make the poster go through an interview and ask them "how did you hear about this place, why do you want to sell, what is your mother's maiden name?"
The real problem is that the thread structure isn't good for active buy sell and trading. Imagine if CU's active membership on the b/s/t board doubles. I was originally going to do a b/s/t forum on my site (not solely for coins, but in general) until I realized the inherent difficulties and just went with classified ad software. CU might want to consider that instead. It has serious benefits. The B/S/T board would be a great place to discuss the items up for sale or trade, though! It's weird (negative) to not be able to respond to questions or comments in your thread for fear of "TTTing" and that's something that you can't get over unless you eliminate that function or keep the number of threads very limited and all on the first page (basically) somehow, such as making them cost money, have stickies cost more as featured ads, etc. Assuming CU doesn't want to go that route, and doesn't want to get classified ad software, the best thing I can come up with is ONE thread per member and to lock the threads immediately or ASAP (or automatically with the software, such as making it so that people can't reply to topics in that forum) so that TTTing is eliminated as an issue. You need to have your PM function on or email posted if you wish to offer conversations as a possibility. You have all your conversations privately. The owner of the thread can edit it to update it with info that results from those PMs if they wish, eliminating the "but good questions and responses are valuable" factor. I would also consider making subforums or multiple forums (Ebay, non-ebay, etc.) and perhaps making the amount of threads that show higher per page. You can make it so that a member can only post one thread per week or whatever the numbers work out to keep things reasonable. People can always post links to their "out of sight" threads in their new post if they want, too. Just some food for thought.

There is a very annoying thread on the BST which is shouting in all caps, pimping a website.
Eliminate any thread which is not selling or buying a specific item or items. This would include links to websites, offering to buy "everything", or offering services. And please use proper capitalization and punctuation.
FF, it won't be weird to not be able to respond to questions or replies in your thread because there won't be questions or replies if just the thread author can post in it. It will all be private, as financial transactions should be.
So, yes, essentially locking the thread is the answer, author can ttt once daily, edit original post as needed, date of edit will show, and communicate privately.
Imagine how quickly and efficiently you will be able to shop in the BST.
There is no downside. It is the answer.

Pharmer, I agree. That's what I meant - it's like, either let people discuss things in their thread or don't. I always found it odd not to respond to something because I had already TTT'd. I see no problem, as you don't, with all talk being via PM or private email. Locking the threads treats them more as ads. I still think that ultimately, the thread structure is inferior to other forms, such as classified ad software. I think CU can get away with it for now but like I said if the activity doubled, threads would simply disappear too fast. They already do. I think sub-forums or additional forums to spread it out could help a great deal.

This hypothetical question might be getting too technical, but here it goes. And to preface it, the question of just 1 thread per member period or 1 thread per day needs to be answered.
If the answer is 1 thread per day, then the question of what constitutes 'a day'? 24 hours or 12:01am to 12pm?
I can see were the possibility of TTT a thread late at night & creating a new on the next morning creating 2 threads from the same member on page 1.
I'm just saying that might happen, are we OK with that?
Unless I missed a reply, nobody is saying much about selling, buying & trading on the Registry Set forum, is this going to be our loophole?

You can BST registry class coins as long as they are PCGS and aren't just "junk" coins (ie.... common as dirt in low grades and at low prices...think of throwaways). Carol has already stated that. Also, the registry forum has handled selling much better as people generally know how to function in a group setting.
Try to use the registry forum as a "loophole" and you will likely find Carol coming down on you with a big stick.
Try to use the registry forum as a "loophole" and you will likely find Carol coming down on you with a big stick.
Does she even have time to moderate the forum?
How many threads break these rules daily? 1. You may have one selling message per day. 2. You may offer only PCGS-graded coins. 3. Your message can offer up to 10 coins. 4. Once your message has been posted you may not use “ttts” or other methods to keep your selling message near the top of the page.
No my friend, these rules are not being enforced now. What make you think they will be in the future, until it gets so out of hand that they crack down on that forum like they will on this one?
....the registry forum has handled selling much better as people generally know how to function in a group setting.
Until folks start migrating there from here, just like some came here when the OF closed down.
Quote it as you want Ajia.....but I have a feeling that if people try to misuse it as a "loophole", which is what you wrote, that she will find time to moderate that forum a bit and there will be some whiners.
As it is right now, it isn't a big deal if someone responds to their own thread over there. As usual, some people seem to want super tight/concrete rules and not care that things seem to work well. Just like all the proposed "rules" in this thread....people need to get a life, realize that there are 1 or 2 main issues that cause problems here, and move on.
I not quoting "as I like", I am quoting the rules that are being broken right now.
As far as 'concrete rules', yes I like concrete rules. Then you know where you stand & what is & is not allowed. Are you inferring that the rules locked at the top of the forum aren't 'concrete'?
Also shows what good rules lock at the top of a forum does.
