2006 Topps factory set

I saw this at a Toys R Us the other day. It is selling for $50. What is special about this set besides including all players from this year.

I am an 80's card collector, so I know nothing about the modern era, but I am willing to learn. I do collect modern non-sportscards though.

I presume you saw the standard factory set. There is nothing "special" to the set, just Topps regular complete set. If you are looking for something special, they do produce versions for certain teams where the box pictures only players from that team and I believe includes 5 prospect cards from that organization. I'm sure they have the Yankees.

Some factory sets have "exclusive" cards - I'm not sure about the 2006 set tho.

I used to buy one every year but have lost interest - I would rather have the fun of collating my own set.

Unfortunately, in 2004, I stopped doing the Topps base set. I was doing 2-4 sets a year at one time.

One of my co-workers collected every Topps factory set he could get his hands on - he made the mistake of mentioning it during a move - and the "box" came up mia after he arrived at Ft. Bragg, NC.

Can you imagine my stress every time I had to make a move in the military?

A few times, the stuff went separately in a sealed container - surprisingly paid for by the military.

I seem to recollect that the impetus for the factory set was encouraged by companies like Sears and Penny's to sell in areas where people reported difficulty buying packs? But, also as Christmas presents?
I would imagine Topps may have - actually - dumped their excess product on Sears and Penny's?

Back around 1991 - the PX dumped a bunch of sets for like 15 bucks a set - I think I have a bunch.
Couldn't resist what I thought was a bargain? Now? Well...

Do they still do Christmas factory sets? If I ever get to collect sealed Topps factory sets, I want to get the Christmas sets because that's always been my favorite holiday. And I believe the 1992 Topps Christmas set even had a red ribbon on the box too! I wonder if any of the other Christmas sets actually had Christmasey stuff on the box, like Santa or something.

This is what I am getting at: We know that the best 1984 set is from Donruss, then Fleer and Topps comes in third. For 1983, Topps is first and Fleer and Donruss are about even with eachother.

Where does the 2006 Topps set rank? That's the problem with collecting modern cards--we don't which set is worthwhile in terms of numbers printed.

Like Mike mentioned, he bought many factory sets from topps on the cheap, but its the same value now as it was back then and it did not even keep up with inflation. I am sure getting the 1986 factory set is cheaper than the $50 for the 2006 one.

I like the Topps stadium club and fleer ultra sets from the early 90s. Very attractive cards!! However, they are dirt cheap today, but expensive way back then.

Indeed! I just won a 1992 Ultra MASTER set (and in binder/pages too) for only $41 counting shipping (I can't believe no one else bid on this; this is a beautiful, very hard to put together set):

1992 Fleer Ultra baseball set with all four insert sets!

And I agree, the 1992-94 Ultra sets were gorgeous. And yes they are cheap now, but they're the same cards as before, right? I was also able to get a 1994 Leaf Limited complete set (Donruss' answer to Fleer Flair and Topps Finest at the time) a few years ago for around forty something dollars. Not bad considering I read a late 1994 Beckett letter to the editor mentioning someone who bought two cartons of 1994 Leaf Limited for $175 EACH. Ouch...

Estil, you found some really good deals out there. The 1992 Fleer Ultra was exactly what I was thinking in terms of some really nice sets out there. You really got that for dirt cheap. Nice job!!! I think it would be more expensive to put that together yourself. I hope the condition of each card is MINT. The album pages look like they are Ultra Pro Platinum--those would be the good ones to go with.
