    The series only went up to 720. I believe it came out of Baseball Cards Magazine...........

    Edited to add it could be from a newer Topps set that had a bunch of "cards that never were" rookies. My memory aint what it used to be....

    I agree, looks like a Baseball card magazine card.

    Did they use his '75 Topps card for the image.

    Anyway, a very cool looking 'pre-rookie rookie' card.

    Yes, Garvey does seem superimposed on that card.

    That is a cool looking card. I have always liked Garvey. Unless he broke into the majors when he was pushing 40 (as he looks in that card), it is indeed a speciality type issue. His legit first card is the #341 Topps offering from 1971. Like all of the other 71's, a tough card to find in really nice condition.

    My guess on the year of that image is '78, give or take a year.

    I knew a guy in Middle and High School (i.e., when Steve was an annual All Star) who said he looked like he was getting ready to chop wood, which is both accurate and pretty funny.

    That one, the '57 Musial, the '63 Fleer Aaron and Rose, the '54 Mantle and the Williams cards are the ones that stand out, for me.

    I've seen a pic, somewhere along the way of a very young and very crewcut Steve posing with Gil Hodges. I always thought that was kind of cool.

    I used to have three issues of Baseball Cards Magazine from 1987, 1989, and 1991 (all with Don Mattingly on the cover); when did that magazine exist and when did it go under? I'm also curious as to whatever happened to Sport magazine (my grandpa used to love it).

    Sport went under a few years ago, a victim of the poor advertising climate in the years after 9-11. I had a subscription on and off for years and always liked the depth of the articles. They also had the virtue of having a lot of great covers, often of subjects who have puzzlingly few covers of Sports Illustrated because SI was too busy featuring horses or third rate boxers.

    Krause's Baseball Cards started in '81 (I still have my dogeared copy of the first issue) and ran at least into the early '90's. I have a lot of issues of it from the late 80's-early 90's. They often had insert panels of cards of then-current players done in old Topps formats. Those were always cool to look at.
