Liriano likely out for all of 07

Huge blow to the Twins.

If I cheered for a team in the division with a chance, I would be happy.

Unfortunately I cheer for the Royals so I have the luxury of feeling bad for the guy.

I just read this as well..tommy john surgery and missing an entire doesn't bode well for one of the most promising young pitchers to come along in a long time.

I hope he recovers completely and the twins are patient enough to let him heal fully...not to pressure him back into service too soon.

Generally, the Twins organization (down to the lower minor league levels) is kind to pitchers. Pending a successful surgery, I expect Liriano will be allowed to come back at a pace that his body allows.

What a raw deal for this kid... he's one of the best young arms in the game, but because he's only a rookie, never had a chance to make any real money, and now there's a good possibility that he will never be able to pitch nearly as well as he has in the past because of the Tommy John surgery. Not many hard throwing pitchers recover well from Tommy John surgery.

It's a really bad break for the Twins, who looked like they were coming together well by the second half of the year... now they're out Liriano and Radke next year and have limited ability to sign a significant free agent (to a longer-term deal which the better ones look for) because they have to plan ahead to sign Mauer & Morneau, who are currently arbitration eligible and going to cost a fortune if the Twins want to try to delay their free agency by a year.

Being that the consensus is that Tommy John guys don't FULLY come back unitl the second full year of action .... the Twins may be waiting until 2009 before Liriano is back to or better then he was. IF he can come back. Which I hope he does image

Hell yeah it is worth the surgery! He could be better then he was before ..... or not. That is the unkown. What really sucks is that Twins fans will not really know the success of this until well into the 2009 season.

Wow, that is awful news. I hate to see that happen to anyone, let alone a young kid just getting his career going. Agreed the Twins need to let him heal up 100% before they even think of rehabbing him.
  • Sucks to see it happen to him, but when he got hurt the first time, should the Twins not have shut him down for the season then? He came back way to early, I believe against the Tigers!

Well, it's a catch 22 for the Twins at that point. For most pitchers with pitching arm "twinges" it's basically up to the pitchers descretion when/if they throw again. Looking at the type of pitcher Liriano is which is a hard throwing slider/curve pitcher I would've shut him down(do to the tendencies for those type of pitchers, those pitches put more strain on the elbow than all other pitches). But the Twins were in the thick of a playoff race, and no doubt Liriano was/is better than all other Twins pitchers besides Santana.

Sucks that it happened to such a great prospect, hopefully they'll bring him along slowly and allow his arm to get back to pre-injury form before he takes the mound again.

Hope so too, although he is in the same division as my beloved Tigers, I do enjoy a great pitching battle as to opposed to offensive games. Hope he comes back strong as he was early in this season, and hope to see many games between he and Verlander!
  • I'm a big fan of pitching, and as a Yank fan I can tell you, the Tigers(as long as the staff is kept together, as the majority are very young) have a VERY bright future. It's an amazing rotation, and the relievers aren't gonna let down either. Even though the Tiggs eliminated the Yanks in the postseason this year, they're such a great story for baseball. A great mix of savvy vets, as well as a bunch of young up-and-coming stars. To be honest, I'd like to see Alfonso Soriano get signed by the Tiggs.

  • Would be awesome to see that, but no way are the Twins gonna let that happen. Like you, I am also a fan of the pitching game, and even though Liriano is out as of now, I do not feel as if it "just makes things easier," in fact, I prefer our best vs. their best perspective! Great pitching out of the Tigers and Twins over the next few years, would make for some exciting baseball. Hell, the only team I really saw able to hit Liriano this year were the Tigers, two if his losses, unless I am incorrect, were at the hands of the Tigers, although I think one loss was in relief! Still sucks to see a young pitcher with so much promise, go out the way he did, I can only hope that he comes back as good or better as he was before! I still get scared thinking about Joel Zumaya, still think for one reason or the other, his next pitch can be his last, even though he is a monster. The W.S. this year did not show how valuable he really is!
