Thanks for "The Glory of Their Times" recommendation!

I read on one of the threads about this book and I picked it up on Half.com for something like $5 shipped. It has been a great read so far! Thanks for those of you that recommended the book!

I think that I'm going to put together a "The Glory of Their Times" registry set for myself! Should be fun tracking down all of these turn of the century ballplayers that I've read about!

I've got the book, but I was told that the book on tape had the actual interviews with the players.
Great stories, no matter what the format.

Oooo...I might have to find the book on tape if that's the case. Can anyone verify that for sure?

    from an amazon reviewer

<< <i>But now, as if the book weren't enough, the tape recordings of the actual interviews are available in audiobook form. Each is introduced by Ritter, who came to know many of the players quite well. And in his introduction, Ritter reveals that it was only years after the project that it occurred to him that one of the things driving him was the death of his own father. Recapturing the memories of the players his father had loved served as a final filial connection. >>

So on the New York Giants in the early part of the last century you had Snodgrass's muff and Merkle's boner.
    What a team!

The Old Ballgame: How John McGraw, Christy Mathewson and the NY Giants created modern baseball by Frank Deford was excellent as well- highly recommended.
And if you haven't read David Halberstamm's Summer of '49 you should add that to the list.

I have to say that reading "Glory" at age 11 or 12 or so really got me into the history of baseball and probably fueled my passion for collecting. Thanks to Mr Robert Chan for selling me that book!

So far, it's been a great read.

I'm now trying to figure out which cards I want to pick up of each of the interviewees. I think it should be fun.

It's going to be a bit of a mix and match for the cards, but there are at least 10 of the 26 that have T206 cards and another 7 of the 26 that have '33 Goudey cards. So, that takes care of over half of the 'set'.

Here's the list of the players.....

    Rube Marquard
    Tommy Leach
    Davy Jones
    Sam Crawford
    George Gibson
    Jimmy Austin
    Fred Snodgrass
    Stanley Coveleski
    Al Bridwell
    Harry Hooper
    Joe Wood
    Chief Meyers
    Hans Lobert
    Rube Bressler
    Babe Herman
    Edd Roush
    Bill Wambsganss
    Sam Jones
    Bob O'Farrell
    Specs Toporcer
    Lefty O'Doul
    Goose Goslin
    Willie Kamm
    Heinie Groh
    Hank Greenberg
    Paul Waner

ARNY - Besides the book, the audio tape and the record album (from '66)
there is also a VHS tape from the PBS broadcast of a few years ago.
Its great w/ plenty of pictures of the players who were being interviewed
as well as the subject matter of great like Cobb, Mathewson & McGraw.
I had 2 copies and just sent my spare to MANTLEFAN as he started a PSA
registry set of the players in the book. He enjoyed the video as well.
Try eBay and you may be able to pick the video for $10-$20...jay

Here's a scan of the 1966 record album w/ Rube Marquard

  • I agree, Arny. I purchased a copy after reading the post and really enjoyed it, too. Now to find these other recommended books. At the top of my list is a Washington Senators 1901-1947 history by Morris Bealle. I didn't bid on it recently and have regretted it since...

Here is the link to the CDs. I own the disks and they are really great. I have them on my ipod now and will listen to them in the car.

Wow, I didn't know there was a video of it as well! I just looked it up and it shows one for sale but for $45. Little too steep for me, but I'll keep an eye out.

I hadn't even checked to see if there was a "The Glory of Their Times" registry until you mentioned something Jay. Frank started the set with interesting choices for the cards. Can those be changed at all? I'd want earlier issues of some of the choices made there. Any suggestions?

ARNY - Yes you don't have to use Frank's choices on the cards.
Like a HOF registry set, you can use any card of the player during his career...jay
  • "Glory of Their Times" is a masterpiece. I recommend the following others:

The Boys of Summer - Roger Kahn
    Stolen Season - David Lamb
One Pitch Away (The Players' Stories of the 1986 League Championships and World Series) - Mike Sowell

Oh, okay...good. I'm looking for the earliest example of a player's cards. Here's what I have so far on my initial list.....

    Rube Marquard T206 (Rookie)
    Tommy Leach T206
    Davy Jones T206
    Sam Crawford T206
    George Gibson T206
Jimmy Austin 1911 M116 Sporting Life
    Fred Snodgrass T206
    Stanley Coveleski T206
    Al Bridwell T206
Harry Hooper 1911 M116 Sporting Life
Joe Wood 1911 M116 Sporting Life
    Chief Meyers T206
    Hans Lobert T206
    Rube Bressler 1919 W514
    Babe Herman 1933 Goudey
    Edd Roush 1915 Cracker Jack
Bill Wambsganss 1921 E121 American Caramel
    Sam Jones 1933 Goudey
    Bob O'Farrell 1933 Goudey
Specs Toporcer 1922 E120 American Caramel
    Lefty O'Doul 1933 Goudey
    Goose Goslin 1933 Goudey
    Willie Kamm 1933 Goudey
    Heinie Groh 1915 Cracker Jack
    Hank Greenberg 1934 Goudey
    Paul Waner 1933 Goudey

......I'm still tweaking the list, but that's what I will probably start the journey with. This list gives me an excuse to start picking up a couple of those 'classic' sets like the T206 and 1933 Goudey cards that I've wanted but never really had an excuse to start on. image

  • I was on vacation for a few days and missed jumping in on this thread. Coincidentally, during the vacation, I was able to finish this book. I can safely say that it is the best baseball book I've read. I'm planning on getting the CDs sometime in the near future. While I was reading it, I thought to myself that it would be fun to start a set featuring these players and had no idea that a registry set already existed. Even better is that I already have a couple of them in my collection!

On a side note, I'm now reading "The Long Ball" which recounts the 1975 baseball season. Also a great read.

Well, I'm glad others have read this great book as well.

Jay, this set is weighted and I don't think you can change the cards in one day like the HOF sets which are not weighted.

Always looking for 1957 Topps BB in PSA 9!

Was there ever a card to commemorate Charlie Faust and how he 'helped' McGraw's teams win?
