Even with a loupe these kinds of results can happen, especially with these issues. '87 D All Stars are oversized, with black borders, so it's a total dice shoot as to how they'll get graded. All the pop ups have at least some wear on the corners, and it's hard to know how the grader will interpret that wear (if he understands that it's the result of how the cards will cut he'll be more generous; if he doesn't understand that then you can end up with 7's and 6's). With the M & M panels it again depends on how the grader treats the perforations on the corners of the card, and there isn't any good way (at least none that I've found) to predict that.

You think a resubmit would be in order? Is it really that much of a roll of the dice?

With some of these more obscure '80's and '90's issues which have inherent condition problems, yeah-- I actually do think it's that much of a roll of the dice. Some of this stuff is TOUGH to grade. I know I wouldn't want to be a grader stuck with, say, a pile of 1983 Fleer Stickers, or a bunch of 1987 General Mills panels. There are just a bunch of different ways to 'interpret' these cards, and your results really, really depend on how the grader interprets them.

I doubt I'd resubmit them, since it's possible you'll get the same grader (which translates into the same results, or at least something close) and unless you catch a guy who takes his modern players sets very seriously ( or a wildcard like sevensorbetter) in a real mood to bid big it's hard to get more than $30 for some of these cards in PSA 10. But they can be fun to send in at least once, and sometimes the results can surprise you. For instance, I caught two PSA 10's on a couple 1986 Topps Tattoos Pete Rose cards about three months ago, and since they were the 1st and 2nd graded PSA 10's I sold them for $150 and $140 respectively. But I have no doubt that if another grader- or maybe even the same grader in a different mood- had seen these cards they would have come back 8's.

Sometimes PSA (rightfully) catches some guff for what appears to be grading inconsistencies, but I give them more or less a free pass on some of this stuff because it's just so hard to grade.

Edit to add: When I grade modern stuff anymore these is the ONLY kind of stuff that I grade; low pops from obscure sets. I don't see any point in sending in HOFers from any post-1980 mainstream issue, since all this stuff has been graded to death and every one who wants one of these cards in a high grade slab already has one. The exception is 1986 Topps, where low pop Mets and Red Sox can fetch big dollars, along with a few of the HOFers (I can't wait to be the guy who catches the first 1986 Topps Nolan Ryan in PSA 10, lol), but other then that I just say why bother? There's nothing more depressing then getting $10 for a HOFer in PSA 10, so I limit myself to finding those issues which don't have high pops. It can lead to some pretty strange results, but on the balance I think it's more fun that way AND easier to make a couple bucks.

The Clemens cards would all be nice scores in PSA 10-- probably about $50 each or so. On the Ripkens it would probably depend on who was active on Ebay when you put them up, but the '87 D All Star would be a sweet card and probably sell in that $40 range. The pop-up in PSA 10 could hit the moon IF you didn't start the bid at $4.99 or something like that. With a card like that I'd put a high starting bid on it (probably $100 bucks), and if it didn't sell I'd put it in my Ebay store with a high price tag and wait for someone who realized just what a tough card that was to stumble into it.

I bought a loupe 2 weeks ago. I'll see how much better I do with it.
I was itching to send in something to grade so that is why I sent that stuff in. Most had all been stored since the 80s so I expected better.
It was fun though to go through some my oddball stuff.

87 DOnruss All-Stars are very hard to come by in MINT condition.

M&Ms panels are pretty impossible in the PSA 10 grade. A 9 is a 'standard' grade, but a 10 is not a realistic assumption.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
