Problem with something I bought...how do I proceed with credit card company?

Hi all,
Purchased something using paypal and credit card as payment. Have heard others talk about the extra protection that using the credit card gives you.
How do I report/file a claim via my credit card??
Thanks to all
Jeff

I did this a few years ago.
To start - work with paypal first - they get testy when you don't give them first shot.
2nd - save all emails about the transaction.
3rd - has it been under or over 30 days? If under - call paypal. If over, call you credit card co. and tell them you want to file for a "refund" - to unwind the transaction. Get your statement which has the charge when you call for reference.
The credit card company will want copies of everything to include the emails and how you were dealt with.
They issued me an "immediate" credit for the transaction and will only recharge it if they find you were at fault and not the seller. When the seller sees the immediate issuance of a credit - they will probably go ballistic - don't worry - it's your right - if the seller has been nonresponding - THIS will get their attention!

Offered somebody less than what they were asking for an item on ebay. Seller ended the auction early and I paid for via paypal with a credit card.
My understanding was that you dont have paypal protection if an item was not purchased from ebay??
If that is the case, then I guess I go directly to my credit card company?
Thanks Much

It seems you're talking about ebay/paypal related program.
That has nothing to do with the fact that paypal is the middleman and wants first shot at resolution.
There was an incident where someone didn't go thru paypal first and they jumped all over him.
If under 30 days, give them first shot IMO. Or at least, give them a call - they will tell you if they want out.

Actually the window for filing a claim with Paypal is now 45 days, but otherwise Mike's advice is spot-on.

ummmmmmmmmmmmm, CALL THEM
Go through Paypal first, but get right on it now and do not delay. What Mike said about a guy who went to the credit card company first instead of paypal was me (and possibly a few others who did the same thing). Paypal went beserk on me and banned me permanently. I had no paypal for a long time. I did get my money back from the credit card company though
Being without paypal kind of sucks because it eliminates another layer of protection which I really needed when I paid for a bunch of items by personal check and then had no recourse with Paypal or CC when the items were not as described (Mike knows about that one as well). I have paypal again by simply re-registering
Save all evidence so when you write your case, you can staple copies of emails and receipts that you can reference--making it a more solid case. You really can't lose like that.
If you have to go through your credit card company:
1. call the 1-800 number and tell them you want to file for a refund
2. Once they transfer you, tell them what you bought and when so the credit card associate can find it on his/her screen. Briefly explain what happened if they ask.
3. They will issue you a temporary credit and send you a form to fill out.
4. While you are waiting for the form, start writing your case on MS Word. Make it concise, but cite all evidence and circumstances you can to show that you are not happy with the items because they arrived damaged, not as described or other typical consumer complaint.
5. Once the form arrives, fill it out. Include your written case and copies of all evidence you want to submit (reciepts, photos, email, appraisals, expert witness) packaged in one envelope and send it to the appropriate address.
6. Once you did this, you will recieve confirmation that they got your materials and are reviewing it. The credit card company have a limited amount of time to investigate your case. If they take too long, that means you win. Therefore, if your case is well written and well supported, you can't lose. I think the only way a consumer can lose is if there is no evidence or they just whine in their case description without showing where they have been wronged. If you receive no confirmation, do call and make sure they got it.
I am not here to bash sellers or businesses that otherwise operate in good faith, but I have no compassion or patience for withholding information, scams, misleading language, or anything that separates you from your money without your blessings.
I use my credit card protection at will and to the hilt because I am tired of being taken advantage of. I am a sweet man, but I am not a door mat. I don't like to see others in the same situation. Every year something goes wrong with a purchase I make or close relatives (on ebay or brick/mortar stores). I try to make things right with the merchant, but if they don't cooperate, I politely leave. They think they have won and are done. However, I file with the BBB and then zap them with a chargeback via my credit card company. What I wouldn't give to have a picture of their faces when they see charge back and BBB complaint letter in the same week. Its not worth their hassle and they probably wished they had just taken the high road.
Filing with your CC company get easier when you have to do it as much as I have. I make every transaction with the forsight of recourse. Its all about peace of mind.
