Sorry state of modern coins.

I long for the coins of the deco period. The new moderns are poor examples of what's possible. The age of great coins was the same for the rest of the world as it was for the USA. Those great coins of france and germany(goetz) from that period and the artisty of the italian coins make me long for actual real artists to again make their mark on numismatics.

Why would you bother with modern, when you don't own all of the material of which you speakimage
  • No I'm just irritated with Paypal shipping and I thought I'd vent about something. Just a senseless rant Though I really do think moderns have a long way to go in terms of inspiring new collector to get into numismatics.

If you don't like anything by Stuart Devlin then it's likely you have a different reason for hating moderns.

A lot of people hate moderns but that's because they consider them common and many are difficult to
find well made. It's really funny to hear people slam moderns on this basis when there are series like
the Swiss francs which have the exact same design as the old silver issues but are just harder to find.
Or there's the much maligned clad dimes and quarters which are often said to be modern crap and have
cookie cutter characteristics and low profiles. But the naysayers always omit the fact that the early is-
sues are identical to the silver they replaced. Then they'll talk about how common they are despite the
fact that most can't be found in rolls unlike the silver coins.

On average I'd agree the moderns aren't as nice as the older coins but they don't strike coins "on average"
and some of these designs and executions are the best ever made. Almost without exception the moderns
are already scarcer than the older coins.
