Do any of you guys feel bad when you bid on a card..

that another guy that is doing the same registry as you has bid on? I won 27 auctions tonight and outbid another registry guy and I feel kinda bad. Every auction he bid on, I won with the exception of one that I didnt need. I am happy but also feel bad.

Anyone feel this way?

  • yup..I always have that struggle!!

even worse...if you see something that you like and you have a good customer bidding on the same card!!

alot of times..I will bow out if I know the other person.
  • As tough as it can be to see others from the same registry bidding against you or as you say in the reverse bidding against them at the end of the day it comes down to one thing who wants it bad enough to win. In your case you wanted it more then they did. I have built a few relationships with other reg members and if we can help each other out we do and in the case of bidding sometimes we will discuss who wants or needs what so we all get our fair share without costing each other a months salary on one card but if its a super special card we all want then lets face it money talks and thats the way the world works. I will always help out those that help me when ever I can because building these relationships sometimes are as valuable as the cardboard we collect.image
ALWAYS LOOKING TO BUY HIGH GRADE 79/80 OPC HOCKEY !!! & Upper Deck "Ice Scripts" Cards

  • If myself an another registry colleague gets a few cards posted to ebay we both need, we dont typically step on each others feet unless it is a rarity. Say if 10 cards come up, as long as one of us isnt greedy Ill stay off a few of them if he stays off mine. Now if he doesnt, I will run up the auction price early in the listing, just to cause some havoc and let the other registry owner know what they have done by being greedy will cost them.

when i lose a card to a competitor, it makes me bid more on the next one...i have won some of my nicest cards by bidding more than i would have, just because my main competitor was previous high bidder (2001 Pujols Donruss Elite Status /68 comes to mind)

Lawnmowerman, in your emmitt regitsry, your 1990 fleer update psa 10 has a psa flip with a BGS 9 foil on top of it....was this card crossed over BGS9 to psa 10....i have never heard of such a thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes it was. It was one of the many cards I submitted to BGS out of my collection. It was undergraded big time, I knew that. So, when I came over to PSA I cracked a ton my BGS hostiges and sent them to PSA. If I remember correctly, every one of them came back a PSA 10.

The reason my Registry pic has the BGS flip was because i just used that scan from a thread I did about my crossovers. If you like that one check out this Ken Griffey Jr. This is another one I knew was perfect but look at the BGS grade.

The Leaf Griffey was a BGS 9 as well. I lost the flip.

  • by any chance, did you send inthe BGS order (the 1 the grif got 8.5) at a low service level? cause when you send in bulk BGS orders, you get back crap grades...when you send in 2 day order, you get good grades, alll they care about is how much you paid for the submission...

I sent in small subs when they had their coupon deals. If I remember it was 10 to 20 days or something. I think the largest sub I sent to them was like 15 cards.
  • ya, so it was one of their specials....you get what you pay for...if you sent those cards in 2 day, $25 a pop, they would have all got 9.5's....

Matt, if it makes you feel any better, think of it this way ...

That other guy just lost his main competitor for the cards. Next time they come up he'll get them for about 50% of what you paid. image

In all seriousness, don't feel bad. You don't know what the other bidder has going on. They could've just scored the biggest and best Emmitt lot in the history of the world and took a little off each bid because they're so happy about receiving THE BIGGEST AND BEST EMMITT LOT IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD (for dirt cheap, did I mention that?) image

No reason to feel bad. Remember, you could be on the other side of that coin one day. Ying and yang. Even flow. Peanut butter & jelly. It all works out. image

It's basically reverse-shilling. An intentional conspiracy between people to charge buyers more money is called a shill and is frowned upon and probably illegal. But, an intentional conspiracy between people to make a seller lose money that would have normally have been there without the prior agreements, is considered ok. I'm not really sure how to feel about that. It seems ok to do but is technically the same as a shill.

Nah. Shilling, when it involves driving a price up, involves fraud. Someone places fake bids in order to drive up a price. Two people agreeing not to get into a bidding war doesn't involve any fraud.

If I need a card for my set I bid away. If someone else is working on the set, it really has no bearing on whether I bid or not. This applies for me in 99% of the cases. What I go by is my predetermined limits on each card. For example I'm working on a 84 Donruss set but if the bidding for PSA 10's goes over $20 I usually stop bidding. Unless they are stars that I really really want. ON a few rare occasions I've noticed a fellow registry member bidding and have stopped bidding but most times you really don't know. Some of the registry members use different bidder id's then they do on this registry so unless they send you a message or you happen to know them there is no way to know if you are bidding against another member. For the 84 Donruss set I've gotten to know a few of the members exchanging messages and I know that they have different bidder names then registry names.....most of the time you just don't know who you are bidding against.

just my thoughts on an early Saturday morning...hey, at least it isn't snowing!!

  • I get mad when I get outbid by someone that already has the card in their set. Several set registry guys are hoarding.

I get frustrated when I bid $175 on a PSA 8 that used to be an $8 common a still get outbid by 6 or 7 people! It's gonna be a long time before I get that hole filled!

I laugh when I see cards I want go for prices so high that I no longer care.
  • joedimaggio-- I agree with you. Alot of times when a rare card comes up, the same bidders are in there with usually the same guy winning it, time after time. They ARE hoarding them!! But, I DO bid high if I really, really want that card......

Another reason may be they are unhappy with the card or cards they have already and are in search of a 8 or 9 that is in better shape than the one they already have. I have a few in my set that I am going to buy doubles of in hopes of getting a better condition card

I agree with Matt, if a card is within my budget and doesn't exceed my dollar value limit then I will bid if I think it is a better looking card than the one I have....I then turnaround and sell the one I don't like if I win.....al.

I usually get a nice email when I outbid a fellow board member. I usually do the the same to him when he beats me out. Keeps it fun!

Not really. I have passed on a few items when I new someone who was bidding on it. I would assume they would do the same for me unless they really wanted it. I now there are a few guys on the HOF Auto Football set that I have gone up against on a few cards and vice versa. I dont think there is much of a grudge on any one that wins the item. As you said, the next one should be easier to get.

    No.
I will lay off cards sometimes, without any agreement, because I know the high bidder, expect he'll outbid me, and have no interest in running him up.
