Wow, I'm surprised. This is exactly what I was going to cay... except I like the clark, Gruber Mountain $20 more than the $10. Don Kagin has a slug in his personal collectiong that grades about F02. I'd do anything to have a chance to buy it.

Cincinnati $10, preferably overstruck on an Ormsby.

I like the itty bitty California ones. They're so cute!

I have a fake one with a bear on it. I think I would like the real coins even better if they actually had bears on them.

1851 $50 Humbert octagonal slug fom the US Assay Office, lettered edge would be my dream. Like somebody's icon... imageimage

Like Amanda, I'd enjoy a small California territorial piece and hope to add one some day....Mike

  • Massachusetts and California Company $5 gold - interest sparked by my acquisition of a Kagin 2b copper trial piece in 1972 - my first "expensive" coin purchase. For sheer beauty - the Kellogg $50
  • Mormon gold has always been one of my favorites, esp the piece with the lion and the bee hive!

Massachusetts & California Co. Five Dollar. I live a bit south of Northampton so I like the local connection. Plus it's an unusual design.

I'd go for either a Templeton Reid or an Ormsby.

As for the fractional ones, it's a toss-up between the 1854 Defiant Eagle 25c, or the 1853 Arms of California 50c.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the Brasher doubloon. It's still the most famous privately issued gold coin.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I'd settle for an 1848 "CAL" quarter eagle......
