Help, someone talk me out of buying a 2006 5 pound proof from the UK mint

I LOVE the design, and always wanted a nice MEGA SOVEREIGN.
love the low mintage (1k)...if they're even still available.

Seems like a hefty premium tho.

someone talk me out of it.

    If you lust for it and can't sleep at night;
please don't let us dissuade you.
When you get what you want and you know it,
    you'll sleep better
than if you said 'screw it'.

  • I feel your pain, the more British coinage I get the more I want a five pounder.

I picked up the proof sovereign this year, and that comes at a hefty premium

The only way I can think of dissuading you is by saying - if you get one you may want more! That didn't really help did it!

Plus there is the slight matter of it having a spot value of approximately $725 and a purchase price of GBP725, a 91% mark up!

Specs as follows: 22 Carat Gold, 39.94 gms, 36.02 mm

FYI - The fairly recent single £5's are BU. The proof £5's only come with the set. In the previous years (early 80's, I believe), the the £5 proofs were issued as singles in addition to the proof set.

you're absolutely right, I think I went from looking at the proof sov and checked out the 5 pound one and thought proof. it's BU.

Ive seen them on the bay cheaper, but Im not sure of the quality.

Buy an older one for a little over spot. I think 1985 is a common year.
Same great design, just as much gold and half the price.

I wonder why there's so little premium out there for the older ones...

    Because:

    1) It is a bullion coin at heart.

    2) There are many to buy, supply versus demand drives the lower price
