1952 topps thread

i figure i might as well start a discussion thread for the 1952 topps baseball set. how many of you out there are building or have built this set. i myself, am nearing the completion of 2 of them. these sets are much more difficult to build than i first anticipated.

    Yeah, 'dems is 'da rules!

If you're going to start a thread about a set...especially the "official" thread for the set, we need to see TONS of scans! image

    Nice cards Co!

I like the 52Ts but can't afford the set - I have picked up some from time to time.

    Here's one of my favorites:

because i do dumb things i guess. actually i kept changing my mind and upgrading. my initial thought was to build 1 set in vg to vg/ex condition. so once i decided to upgrade the first set, i had a very large portion of the lesser grade set (vg-vg/ex) almost done. so i figured what the heck.

I have 2 55 topps sets raw ex and graded

I hope to sell the raw set to buy a psa 7 Clemente and Koufax

  • I try to pick up autographs from the set from time to time. Going forward I will probably be picking up more than I have in the past but they will still be second-fiddle to the 1953 Topps set I am working on. The Mize and Burgess are 2 of my all-time favorite cards from any set, not just the 1952 set.

I'm actually on a pretty tight budget now. 1952 and 1953 Topps autographed sets are the only thing I plan on collecting from here on out that will cost me anything. I have other stuff that I am slowly liquidating to help me out but with a baby born this May and a second already on the way this May coming up, any additional funds coming in will be difficult to come by and require constant negotiations with the wife. I started collecting in 1984 and it has taken me since then to finally have the focus to just work on two sets exclusively.

actually i had 3 mantles, but i sold one last month, it was a psa 4. i got a terrible price on it. very spotty pic for a 4. anyway, i had the campos black star version in psa 4 also, but sold it about 4-5 months ago. i am not counting that as part as the set as i am not doing master sets. just one variation of each card. i dont differentiate between red and black backs for instance.

brumbach-- i like your idea of an auto set. but its kind of weird how the autos go for less $ in the same condition as the non-autographed cards. i really noticed it recently while looking for a grade #400 bill dickey. few hundred $ price difference in psa4-5 equivalent condition. its wacky.

looks like the 1952s you have are all psa7s? nice

My newest addition. It is a little diamond cut but not that bad.

Mike, is it you that has a really nice #2 Runnells from this set? I recall seeing a scan of it on here a year or two ago and thought it was yours.

Autographed vintage cards kind of exist in an alternative universe to their unsigned counterparts. Value is generally determined upon the willingness, or unwillingness, of the signer as well as the year of death. It probably sounds kind of morbid but that's the way it is. That's actually part of the fun for me personally, I have found that by finding out how people died you tend to find out how they lived. It lends a personality and story behind the picture on the card for me. Beyond that, the value is pretty subjective. Some collectors look for higher grade cards but overall the condition doesn't seem to be a big factor to a lot of these guys. I like something that has no paper loss and is reasonably centered, soft corners and mild surface creases are acceptable. I also like to stick with ballpoint pen or very fine-point pens, I hate Sharpie autographs on vintage cards and avoid them like the plague when possible. Higher grade signed cards like the Dickey that was recently up exist in a no-man's land, the regular collectors don't really want a signed speciman in their sets and the autograph collectors can be on the cheap side and will wait for a lower condition example to come along or will not really place any premium on the price.

a bunch of these were crackouts which went fairly equal. except for the hearn #337. was a sgc60/5 and ended up being a psa2. that was a bummer. but all my raw highs graded ok. still cant see why the hearn was a 2. oh well. this whole first set will be psa graded when i am done. 3 cards shy now. as for the second set, just all the high numbers are graded. still pretty sweet.
  • Just wanted to share the cornerstone pieces to my 1952 Topps set (LONGWAY to go) in all PSA 4-6 range. Hope to keep this thread going and gain more collectors of this fine set. Got my second high number for christmas (Only 95 more!) and can't wait to add more in the future.image

  • Yeah I'm on the registry but like I mentioned I'm still very early into the set. My set is under Muth's 52's. Ranked around 60 or so last I looked. Great sub-missions your putting together. All of those high numbers your sending in raw are fantastic image

    Hi all,

Looking for about 75 mid grade 52s for my set. Willing to pay a fair/reasonable amount. If you have doubles in psa 5-7 let me know and I will send you my want list.

    Thanks in advance to all.
