1938 Cartledge Famous Prize Fighters Glossy

Can anyone tell me how the glossy versions were released? Was it a redemption process? Any way to tell the difference between the glossys and regular issues other than holding it in your hand and examining the surface?
I checked the set registry in hopes that the top entries would also include some history or information about the set but that isn't the case. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

PS. Also, I've read that by sending in 50 cards they would send you an album. Is this issue known for having the corner pressings from how the cards were held in the album? Was it the type of album you would paste the cards onto or have the four corner slits to slide them in? Thanks again.
