Do you think this quarter eagle at Heritage will look better or worse in person?

I was taking a look at the Heritage site and this coin jumped out at me. I don't know what it will look like in person, though. I will take a pass on it, but I was curious what people's reactions were.

To me, all gold always looks better in person. Regardless of th condition, the mystique really grabs you when you have one of them puppies in hand.

there's a reason that coin had to be slabed

I agree. I looked at some gold coins for a fellow board member when I was at ANA. The photos do not do those coins any justice. I surely wouldn't recommend bidding on gold (or nearly anything, for that matter) based solely on a photo.

Care to share with us what that reason might be?

  • I'll bet it looks better in hand. But I agree with Barndog, it is tough to get a feel for gold through a picture.

I'm interested to hear why Dork Karl thinks it needed to be slabbed.

Does someone have a link to this coin? I just looked at the current and future auctions and could not see it.

I think it might look better in person. I would bet that the toning is much darker than what the photo shows.

DK---What don't you like about this coin? The toning or discoloration?

don't like the so-called "toning", which looks more like make-up to me, if you know what i mean.

granted, this based on crappy heritage digi-pics.... . . .

I'd like to see a closeup of the spot just above the date. The toning probably looks much better in-hand. But the spot is a serious concern.

The orange discoloration covering the lower half of the obverse could be heavy patination or could be foreign material. If it is the former, I like it; the latter, I don't. I would need to see the coin in hand to try to figure it out.

How about a link to the Heritage listing?
