AT coins in PCGS holders

claychaserclaychaser Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭✭
There has been a lot of talk on the boards about dishonest people "gassing" PCGS graded coins to alter the toning on the coins, and therefore the coins would appear to be "blessed" by PCGS and graded.

What is the position of PCGS on this - will PCGS take any action against those that knowingly selling AT coins that PCGS graded as white coins?

If the coins is submitted for regrade, will it be body bagged for AT?

Does PCGS compare pictures of low value coins, say MS 64 common date Morgans, and compare any wildly toned examples sent in for regrade?

Any information that you can share would be appreciated!

    Hi Clay Chaser,

PCGS is concerned any time someone attempts to alter our product, whether it be the case or the coin in the case.

We have a legal department that determines what action, if any, should be taken.

We review each regrade on an individual basis, but we generally do not look kindly upon artifically toned coins.

PCGS does not comapre pictures of low value coins in an attempt to catch artificial toning. To do so would be time- and cost-prohibitive. Recognizing how difficult such a task is, I'm impressed by the eagle-eyed members of this board and their diligence in watching out for this kind of activity.
