POLL: How many people here LIKE fingerprints

There was a time that I wouldn't buy a coin if it had a fingerprint on it.
Now, I actually find that I'm attracted to coins WITH a fingerprint on it (provided it's beautifully toned).
How many people here actually LIKE a fingerprint on a coin?

I don't buy coins with fingerprints. That being said, I do however; go to the bank and get the state quarters and put them in a Whitman folder. When I insert them, I always make sure that I push it in with my finger. I want to see if the print will show in years to come.image

I guess to me it matters on the coin. If it's a proof, no fingerprints for me! Now if it's a AU-low grade Morgan, a fingerprint here and there is fine by me. I'm not exactly going after a registry set or anything. image

Mike, I'm like you, it has to tone up nicely, but assuming it does it's fine by me. To me it's a bit of history associated with the coin... just like the concept of, "who has used this coin before?". Like Burks though it shouldn't be on a proof.

The one coin where fingerprints would be great would be the one George Washington threw if it could be authenticated.

I would have to evaluate each coin, since I think sometimes they can be OK and other times they are distracting.

Pre slab days, I used to purposely put a fingerprint on the INSIDE of all my Capital holders. At least have SOMETHING if any were stolen and maybe not opened.

If I look at a coin and the first thing I think is "Whoa, fingerprint!" then I won't want it. If you have to really study the coin to see a print, that's OK.

But in either case, I can't say I like them.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I don't like them in the least but there are times when they can be tolerated.

Nothing worse than buying a 90% Silver proof 1995 Kennedy half raw in a plastic round, (thinking, gee, this guy knows how to handle raw proof coins so you buy it) and when you get it in the mail all excited and everything, get it out of the packaging...reverse fine, obverse..."what the???" Big-ole thumb print in the fields! Not my kinda soup.

Old key dates that are rare...I don't care if they were passed around in a church for everybody to see, but "modern crap" better be print free, period.

So, how'd I vote...my category is not up there.

Lift the print and run it through AFIS...just to check the "history" of the coin that is... image

Someday I'd like to see the CSI guys take a fingerprinted coin and run it through all their tests to determine who the culprit is.

I don't mind coins with old fingerprints, but it must be especially infuriating to send a pristine coin to PCGS and have it return encapsulated with a newly acquired print.

    it all depends

    most no some yes

it all depends on how it stis on the coin and where it is and if the coin is monster toned or not

i have seen coins that had a fingerprint but it changed and grew with the toning that turned monster and in favct this particular coin was killer positive with the fingerprint of course this is the exception rather than the rule

it just all depends on a sight seen basis

For me, fingerprints are by far the single most hated attribute that could exist on a coin. I hate fingerprints so much that if the toning pattern on a coin even hints at a pattern similar to a fingerprint, the coin might as well be melted down in my opinion. Several times I've found coins in my collection that either developed fingerprints or else I hadn't noticed them ealier and in each case I coulnd't sale the coin fast enough.

    I HATE FINGERPRINTS!!!!

I do, however, like a few small fly-specs.

I like fingerprinted coins only under one condition - if that print is mine...

My strong desire is for coins that have no fingerprints. Having said that, I've seen too many coins over too many years to not realize I should never say never.
