Should I Sell my AU55 1921 Mercury Dime?

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
As many of you know I was finally able to get my last required update. I picked up an MS63FB which replaced my AU55. Is it time to sell the AU55 coin, or should I hold on to it? Is the market getting weaker or stronger?

Here is a link to completed ebay auctions for 1921 Mercury Dimes. You will have to skim through it to find AU grades. This will give you some idea of what they are bringing on feebay:

We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I think Ken was making a joke. image

My first reaction to your question was, "Sell it to me! image", but then I looked at how much they go for. I'm not quite there yet. image
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

If I didn't need the money......When I open the drawer 20 years from now, a '21 in AU would be one coin I would be very happy to see....

Hoard what is of great value and dump the rest !
  • Mercs have been one of the weaker coin segments for a long time. I don't see that changing any time soon. Many that complete the set go on to sell it, so demand never really goes up. From a strictly financial point of view, the odds are that money in a CD paying interest will do better than money in a 1921 AU Merc, though no one (including me) really knows.

If you are on the fence, one suggestion is to try BST and list a relatively strong, no-regrets sell price for it and see if anyone bites. If no one does, you will have lost nothing, but a few minutes of researching prices and typing up a post (and maybe taking a picture). If it doesn't sell, you can list it again on BST in a couple of months with a slightly lower price, or try Ebay.

If it is an original coin, keep it, if not sell.

I know Ken was joking. He is one of the cornerstones of Mercury Dimes as far as I am concerned! And, don't worry someday you will get to a point where you can get there. I never in my wildest dreams though I would ever be able to put a set together like my dimes.

That's a nice dime! image If you decide to sell it, someone's going to be very lucky to get it!

And, as I just bought a new Dansco Mercury Dime album, I would have an interest in it !

Fcloud, I can and could be wrong here, but I have to say many
people get attached to things. Stocks are one of those things
Oh, no, no don' t, I can't sell my IBM, I can't sell my Intel.
Politely asked; Why are you asking us what you should do?
You are attached to the coin? It was a key part of your set?
You have fond memories of acquiring it? So, many things go into
collecting. That's a neat coin. BUT! If it is an investment don't get
attached. You need the money or want the money or have a
better place for the money. Then you sell it.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got in rare coin collecting
especially buying coins was; "When in doubt don't act".

You have already made the decision anyway. You upgraded your
    set. You already decided.
