What if we compare values 2006 Gold Eagle (First Strikes)

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Is the value being placed on the 70 grades on the RP, PRDCAM and MS

in proportion to the PCGS numbers of each graded in 70 first strike?

  • Nope. The MS70 is substantially scarcer than the proofs, either version. It will prove to be the key to assembling a 70 set.

Actually, the regular proof coin in 70DCAM is the key coin hands down. I know many folks who would gladly trade 2 MS70's in exchange for a single regular proof 70DCAM. In fact, the true trade might even be closer to 2 1/2 -3 MS70 for (1) PR70DCAM right about now I believe. Because of that 70DCAM coin being so elusive, there is not even a single 3-pc PCGS 70 set available for each state of the Union.

Perhaps only the passage of another 6 months to a year,

will show which coin is truly the rarest, in 70 grade, of the three.

One of the problems is the number of coins that have been graded.

    PCGS No: 89997
    Date: 2006-W
    Denom: $50
    Variety: Eagle- 20th Anniversary First
    Desig: PRDC
    69: 648
    70: 45
    Total: 693

    PCGS No: 89995
    Date: 2006-W
    Denom: $50
    Variety: Eagle-20th Anniversary Rev Pro
    Desig: PR
    69: 397
    70: 452
    Total: 849

    PCGS No: 89993
    Date: 2006-W
    Denom: $50
    Variety: Eagle-20th Anniversary First S
    Desig: MS
    68: 1
    69: 1023
    70: 195
    Total: 1219

I believe the ms will be the scarcest. I know that right now the proof dcam 70 is but look at how few have been graded. I also know that the dcam 70 is the only one I need. DAMMMM I have one last set to get graded in hopes to get it. The ms has had the most coins submitted so far.

The reverse proof may be the smallest minted, but in coins that are designated fd 20th anniversary I think that the ms will end up being the winner.

I wonder how many people opened up the sets and just sent in the rev proof?

    O well, time will tell.

Purely in connection with the question Bear poses here, I simply look at the PREMIUM between the 69 and 70 grade. Right now, the premium is less than $1,500-$2,000 for a reverse proof. The premium is less than $1,200 for an MS70. The premium is MORE THAN $4,000+ for a regular Proof. This has nothing to do with what coin is "rarer". Of course, the Reverse Proof is the key to the 3-coin series in raw form or 69 grade and will (mostly likely) ALWAYS be. But, to achieve a perfect 3 coin set of 70 coins, the 70DCAM coin is the key coin to that goal and slabbing one will likely put $4,000 additional dollars in your pocket right now as opposed to less than $1,500-$2,000 for slabbing a PR70 Reverse Proof and less than $1,200 for slabbing an MS70 coin. Those are simply the facts today and, I agree, tomorrow is another day.

  • The problem with the 2006 regular Gold Proof is that there are 3 different slab versions of the same coin......
All the same coin but 3 different slabs!

    1) Regular Proof available since the spring..........
    2) 20th Anniversary Proof 1st Strike
    3) 20th Anniversary Proof

Many of the regular proof coins issued in 20th Anniversary sets lost their chance to so designated as 20th Anniversary with or without FS designation when buyers opened boxes to examine coins. I would guess that at least 1/2 of the 20th Anniversary sets were opened when they arrived.

Now here is where it gets very strange............ How much difference in price for same coin in same grade in each of the 3 slabs??

What would really stoke the fire would be if someone could find some minor difference in the dies used to make the early regular gold proofs and the 20th Anniversary gold proofs!

  • In regard to numbers submitted the current ratios of MS/PR reflect the fact that some of the MS numbers are coming from 2 coin sets. The regular proofs with 20th Anniversary FS slabs will continue to be the rarest.
