Big Profit in Dipped Coins, how do you tell people

I noticed an Ebay auction that is closing in a couple of hours. an 1872 "raw" ms65rd. While checking the persons feedback there is a recent feedback for an auction for this person purchasing this exact coin, except now it's bright and shiney and selling for way more than double. Is this ethical, shouldn't this be reported and how do you report these things?

Current auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/1872-Indian-Head-Cent-Beautiful-BU-Red-Gem_W0QQitemZ270042254748QQihZ017QQcategoryZ41085QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

auction when purchased: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160037648110

Both coins have the exact same carbon spots on the front and back, but now much better looking.

I also noticed that the 1878 forsale is the same coin as in a previous auction pruchased by this seller on 10/6, feedback dated 10/18/06. If you save the pictures to your computer and blow them up, they both have the same mark upper left of the "O" in ONE on the reverse, the coin was purcahsed by this seller in an NGC 65RB holder and now its bright red.

I admit I purchased a coin from this seller that looks good, but now I question if it's the real deal. The purcahse was done over a year ago.

I fear that even if it's reported the auction ends in 2 hours, what to do.

  • A lot of ugly silver cins should be dipped, or someone should at least pay NGC to do it right. Copper on the other hand is just fraud in my book. I still
like the story of the dealer who dipped his copper in cyanide-something making it beautuful. Unfortunately his gingerale drink next to it was the same color--
I suppose he made enough $ to be buried in a shiney copper coffen!.

Best solution is not to bid. For every winner like this, the seller has some losers as well. And the winning bidder still can return it can't they? One trip to the local dealer for an appraisal and that puppy will be right back in the mail.

  • I guess the return policy keeps the feedback rating good?

I'm not out to get this person. The coin I bought looks good and I don't intend, at this point, to send it off. Might now seeing this. I have just been following this persons auctions because it's some neat stuff, and finally decided to do a little research. Thats what I found, in the first post.
