Purchase opporunity...I need opinions please ($3,$5 Gold & Seated/Trade Dollars)

The hobby store around the corner from me does some coins with local folkds. An older woman came to his shop with the following coins. I am not an expert with these coins so I am looking for opinions on grades and possible price I should offer. Thanks to anyone who can contribute to this thread.....

The last trade dollar looks like a really nice choice AU, and if the obverse hairlines are no worse than they look in the pic the around $350 should be about right. Nice coin!

Looks like an offer of $2300 for the group would be about right.

    Thanks, anyone else?

The $5D coin had a twin. Both coins are identicle in grade. A dealer just picked the other one up for $1600. The dealer looked at these and thought the $3D was XF. The trade dollar at the bottom is AU, the other trade dollar was XF and he thought the seated dollar was XF as well.

I like the look of the $3 and the $5. I also like the 78-S T$1. I do not care for the seated dollar or the 75-CC T$1.

What is your motivation? Do you collect these? Are you putting together a type set? Are you looking to buy coins because the price is right? Etc.

I like the coins for a type collection. I think if the price is right I will take them all. The AU trade is $315. The other trade is $100. The seated is $200. The $3D is $1050 and the $5D is $1600.

At $315, go back and buy that AU trade dollar without passing GO, etc. They do not grow on trees like that. It looks original & like it retains much of its luster; as such, it is better than 90% of the slabbed AU trade dollars you'll meet.

  • Basically youare trying to figure a way to know more about coins than a coin dealer---a pretty hard task unless

you specialize--(do Morgan VAMs/bust half rare numbers, etc).

I love the look of the 78S but it is a very common coin. I wholesaled one in PCGS AU55 to RCNH about a 1 1/2 years ago for $275--
It was a nice coin, original ec, but your photo seems to have a bit more eye appeal on the one you're think about. At tht area, you cab't lose IMHO.

The CC is more desirable to many buyers, but it's not that nice and although it looks quite original--the luster has turned too dead nd the Seated is just a common ugly dartkly toned coin--it cn't eveb be dipped becaude the tone is really now "tarnisk!)--It'
s still worth somethjind so don'e be shy about an ofer back of bid!!!

I'd want that CC ---but look at the edges for filing-- or marks that would get it bagged.

I"d pass the $3 gold-only because everyone here keeps saying it's dropping due to the loss of a market-maker --but lets leave the gold adise to real gold experts here--I'm sure not one.

I agree the best way to buy is the whole deal like suggested before--with a fixed mark-up like several hundred. A store dealer is happy to book some quick cash sometimes!

XF45 to AU on the gold coins. Would not be surprised if the 1834 made Au50. But at $1600 it would have to. Pricing on the gold sort of steep. The seated dollar is XFish and not bad. AT $200 that's a rip unless it has too many rim bumps and totally dead surfaces. I do some some luster in the devices.

    The trade dollars seem decent.

Overall the coins would bid on CDN around $2700+.
I'd like to get them for $2200 as well.

    Thanks everyone....

And don't forget to thank the hobby shop owner. It was really nice of him to allow you to image his coins and post them here. Must be a really cool guy.
