Opinons wanted on a potential set registry set

Hello all,

GregM recommend that I ask for opinons from fellow board members on a set that I was thinking about and might apply to others as well.

I am a huge Favre fan and as he inches closer to Marnio's TD record I had the idea of a set registry set that would consist of auto'd cards of players that caught all those TD's.

So I wrote to the Set Registry people and here is the response.

"Unfortunately, this is not the type of set that we would compile onto
the regular Registry. We are not loading sets where a member can add any
card of a specific player, which would require endless spec # updates.
This type of specialty set is perfect for the Collectors Showcase
section of the Registry."

So what this says to me is that sets like the HOF auto'd cards are no longer possible to be added under their new rules. I guess I can do the set as long as their are predetermined cards for the set. I could do that, wait until I have all the cards and then it would be tough for others to get the same cards auto'd. As some I have had signed that arent factory issue. I know I could do the Collectors Showcase, but I think that there might be others who would be interested in this set.

So what does everyone think about these types of sets. I like the fact that the HOF auto sets have so many different cards.

I would love to hear opinons on this.

Thanks,
Jay

Sorry Jay. but I have to agree that the kind of set you want is best suited to the Collector's Showcase.

That being said they need a better way to catalogue the Collectors Showcase sets.

I agree that they need a better way to catalog the showcase sets. Otherwise sets get lost in there.

Great Idea but I don't know where it belongs. I have some of these already. Sanjay Beach, Edgar Bennett, Levens, Favre himself, Sharpe, Freeman, Schroeder, Beebe, and a few others but they are on 8X10's and not cards

I have over half on cards. Also have many photos signed as well. I nearly have all of them just not on cards yet.

Favre caught his own TD pass?
  • I'm pretty sure that the first complete pass that Farve ever threw was caught by himself. He threw the ball which hit a lineman and the ball came right back to him. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that I heard that. Neil

you are correct. his first completed pass was to him self.

Sorry guys, Favre did not throw a TD to himself. Just me being a idiot and not knowing what I am typing.
  • Brad Johnson threw a TD pass to himself (when he played for the Vikings the first time)...I'm not aware that any other QB ever lucked out this way, but I suppose others have done it.

As for the set, I think it is appropriate for the Collector's showcase, but there's really no other category to fit such a set. If PSA were to put together a separate category for records or statistics, it would make sense.

  • Jay,

I sympathise with your frustration. But it is clear that the hard-working set registry staff are swamped with requests to add cards to sets which because of the "spec #" system have to be handled one-by-one. There may, however, be a glimmer of hope on the horizon. When I pitched the idea of the revised Baseball MVP Set (where players would be represented by any graded card/coin from each of their MVP years) this is what Cosetta told me:

"We are currently not loading sets that do not require a specific card,
as that would mean endless updates (spec # additions) for our staff.
We are hoping that with the new software next year, we will be able to
tie into the database so that all spec #'s will be added when the set is
    loaded."

Let's hope that this happens sooner rather than later ... for their sake as well as ours!

i can understand why they would not want this type of set outside the collectors showcase...it would have to be updated every sunday!!! that is way too much work for the regitrsy people....they like sets that are fixed, non-evolving...

the collectors showcase should at least be in Alphabetical order, i look at that screen and say forget it, just a random mess.....
  • The collector's showcase would be much easier to navigate too, if there were some kind of category system. It would have to be maintained by the users, but if everyone can be reasonable about it, it could work.

Well only two new players have been added this year. So its not like do a strike out victim for Clemens or something like that. It probably wouldnt be any more than they added every year with the HOF sets. There biggest problem is that they dont want to have to deal with the number of different Cert#'s there could be for each player. For the HOF auto sets any on the HOFer's cards could be included as long as its auto'd (so for example in the future there would be over 6000 different Favre's that could be included in that set). Hopefully the new software that they are getting might help. I hope it also helps the speed at which cards in general are added to Player sets.
