Just acquired a POP 1 PCGS graded gold piece with a rarity of a high R-6 for $747!!!!

You have got to take a look at what I won!!!

This is a BG-524 1853 $1 Liberty Octagonal of the California Fractional Period 1 era of 1853 to 1857.

It is the LOWEST graded by PCGS at the VF-30 grade with only 9 graded higher and only 2 are in mint state. NGC and ICG has graded NONE. This pocket piece really did circulate in California in 1853 through 1857!!

Even the famed Jay Roe collection did not have a BG-524!! I was stunned.

Now this is the kind of purchase I really can get excited about!!!

Does anyone think I can get PCGS to DOWNGRADE this to VF-25??????

    Hey Robert...all I see are red X's

Edited to add: I see from the "Properties" that they are linked from Heritage. My network has Heritage blocked.

    Neat!

I've always thought that those would be a lot more popular if they were just a little bit bigger.

Neat coin. Period 1 actually started in 1852. These coins actually circulated as money as opposed to Period 2 coins which were sold and collected as souveniers.

PerryHall: You are technically correct in that the 1/4 and 1/2 half dollar Cal gold did begin in 1852 but I was thinking of the $1 pieces which curiously did not begin their dating until 1853!

A strange fact, wouldn't you agree with?

I never understood that myself. I wonder if Don Kagin knows why.

Where have you been? NGC has aggressively been grading them for the past nearly 2 years. The Heritage auctions nowadays have more than 50% of their California Fractionals lots showing NGC graded California Fractionals!

    << <i>Why would a company block Heritage? >>

Some companies only allow web access to specific sites. Everything else is blocked. If you want to access a blocked site, you need to contact your IT department and give them a business reason why you need access to the site. It's usually a rubber stamp in, but I imagine someone would be hard-pressed to come up with a business reason for ha.com.

Love the California Fractionals, btw! They never seem to get the same level of respect as other "territorial" gold issues do.
