did someone just get a bargain?

I just couldn't talk myself into bidding higher on this one. It probably would have gone for more had it been listed in a different category.

The tone and tenor of the Q&A wasn't too encouraging, was it?

    Of course not. image

  • Hehe, the Q&A didn't bother me, the coin's surfaces did. I was willing to gamble, but not that much.

I just did some checking and noticed that the high bidder also won this auction. I think he will be okay.

The words FULL WEIGHT are much smaller on the eBay coin than on Andy's picture. (Of course, maybe the eBay coin isn't full weight!)

At first I thought that was a good point. Then, I noticed that the Ebay image appears to be distorted, the width greater than the height. This could cause the apparent shortness in the letters of "FULL WEIGHT".

    Any more observations?

Spacing of SAN FRANCISCO is off. FRAN is spread out and CISCO is scrunched together.

  • Any more observations?

Crappy rims, crudely engraved "half eagle", mushy lettering elsewhere and generally poor detail which would not be accounted for by wear. Maybe missing a leaf. Oh yeah, then there's the fact that it's raw and on ebay. image Looks like a poor cast copy.

Looks like a poor cast copy.

Ex: Jewelry and sweated pieces often have that look. We need more than just "the look" to condemn this one.

All the devices look to be in the proper place. image

It looks very abused. Why would someone making a counterfeit to deceive a collector make such a low grade piece?

It looks like it was in a bezel. And polished.

I'm dumb... but , it looks like a die was made from a worn coin, then transferred in a press to a worn gold planchet. But that's layman's terms. I noticed the arrows in the clutches of the talons have very rounded tips. This just looks like a transfer die counterfeit to me.

Look at the line from the top of the eagles head, down the neck to the wing. There is only a very slight indentation on the genuine coin. The ebay coin seems to have much more of an indentation. The radius of the curve between the indentation and the intersection of the wing also looks different in the two.

Well, besides looking like an absolute cartoon of a "coin", the purity and weight is wrong. The seller claims that the coin is "24K and weighs 7.38 grams". Read the motto: FULL WEIGHT OF HALF EAGLE, which was 8.359 grams at that time.

The rims just stand out as being all wrong...far beyond what I would expect from an ex-jewlery piece. I don't know...I'm usually not one to take a chance on coins like this...but then again...I don't get may rips either...image

Translation: The coin is fake, I know it's fake, and if you see it in person, you will know it's fake. Besides there are plenty of suckers on ebay that will bid without having to see it in person.

  • Weren't a lot of "fake" jewelry coins made in CA in the 70's-80's? I've forgotten, but even those I thought were worth a few hundred.

Actually all the "estate" and "I'm no expert" crud was more problematic. After all; he sells is near worthless glass, that is pretending to be decent quality "second rate" stuff, but that's not even near the league of second tier material, much less Tiffany etal.

Thanks for that info. Most of my books are in storage, and the redbook surely wasn't a help for weight.
